He died August 7, 1905, in Hecla, Brown County, South Dakota, aged 62 years and 7 months, and was buried there in Portage Cemetery. His gravestone there is inscribed Bradner J. S. 1843 - 1905 3rd Wis. Reg. At the time of his death, John owned a building in Hecla, South Dakota, known as Bradner Brothers & Co., and one fourth interest in the merchandise of that concern. The building was valued at $2500.00 and the stock as $1000.00. On March 16, 1865, John was united in marriage to Lucinda Rhodes, by Benjamin Tellidgley, Justice of the Peace, at The Exchange Hotel in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, in a ceremony witnessed by Mr. Evens and Mrs. Spink. At that time both were residents of LeRoy Township, Dodge County, Wisconsin. Lucinda was born in July 1844, in New York, daughter of parents also born in that State. Lucinda died December 7, 1921, in Hecla aged about 77 years and was buried there next to the remains of her husband in Portage Cemetery. Her gravestone is inscribed "Lucinda Wife of J. S. Bradner 184- 1921." Their children, all born in Wisconsin, were: Myrtle J. born Aug 1868; Joel A. 29 Aug 1869 Samuel G. May 1873. John returned to his home in Mayville, Dodge County, Wisconsin, after his discharge from military service, where he resided for seventeen years. In March 1883, John and his family moved to Hecla, Brown County, South Dakota where he established a grocery store and lived out the rest of his days. That store later came into possession of his sons, Joel and Samuel Bradner, who operated under the name of Bradner Brothers and Company. In the 1880 U.S. Census, Spenser J. Bradner, was a 38 year old pump maker, living in the Township of Williamstown, Dodge County, Wisconsin, with his 37 year old wife Lucinda and their children; 12 year old Myrtie; 10 year old Joel A.; and 9 year old Samuel G. Bradner. In the 1900 U.S. Census, John S. Bradner, was listed as a 56 year old Grocer living in the Village of Hecla, Brown County, South Dakota, with his 55 year old wife Lucinda and their son Joel A. Bradner, a 30 year old unmarried thrasher. They had been married 35 years, owned their home with a mortgage and were the parents of three children, all of whom were living. Also living with the family was their nephew Walter Rhodes, a 20 year old unmarried Wisconsin born barber. Listed next in the census was the family of their son, Samuel G. Bradner. In the 1910 U.S. Census, Lucinda Bradner was listed as a 66 year old widow living on a widow's veteran pension in the Village of Hecla, South Dakota, where she owned her house free and clear. Living with her was her 42 year old daughter, Myrtie J. Dodus and her 50 year old Canadian born son-in-law, Henry C. Dodus. In the 1920 U.S. Census, Lucinda Bradner was listed as a 76 year old widow, living in Hecla, South Dakota, with the family of her 47 year old son, Samuel Bradner.∼spouse: Lucinda
