Description	:	Source: Victor Index 7/28/1904 Obituary John S. McHarg was born in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, May 23, 1837, and removed to Scott County, Iowa in May 1848. At the age of 15 he took up his residence on the homestead adjoining what is now the city of Davenport and which has been in possession of the family until recently. In 1865 he was united in marriage to Mary E. Salsbury of Bradford County, Pennsylvania. In 1872 he purchased a farm south of Victor upon which he resided until time of his death. McHarg was born in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, May 23, 1837, and removed to Scott County, Iowa in May 1848. At the age of 15 he took up his residence on the homestead adjoining what is now the city of Davenport and which has been in possession of the family until recently. In 1865 he was united in marriage to Mary E. Salsbury of Bradford County, Pennsylvania. In 1872 he purchased a farm south of Victor upon which he resided until time of his death. The blood of the patriot was in his veins, his grandfather, a native of Scotland, suffered as a patriot during the Revolutionary War, was taken prisoner at Sackett's Harbor, to be released only by the grounding of his prison ship in the attack on Fort Moultrie April 13, 1775. His father, William McHarg, served with honor in several public offices in Beaver County and gave a son who served as commander in a Colored Regiment in Mississippi at siege of Vicksburg. John S. McHarg has also ever been a man of decided political opinions, and one who believed in the making of good laws, the upholding and enforcement of which he believed to be one of the most important qualities of patriotism. Especially was his heart engaged in the cause of Temperance; and one of the last acts of his life a short time before he was stricken down upon what proved to be his death bed was to sign with two others a notice of assessment of the Mulet tax as provided by law. Years ago he united with the M.E. church at Victor in which he maintained membership, and his death, calmly awaited as a glad transfer to a better world, was that of a christian who rested all of his trust on God through Jesus Christ. His wife, three daughters and two sons survive him, two children having preceded him to the other world.
