McHARG OF DES MOINES IS DEAD AT 89 Mrs. Mary Salusbury McHarg died at her home in Des Moines Sunday, following a four-day illness. Mrs. McHarg was born at Monroeton, Pennsylvania and came to Iowa at the age of 17 years and entered the University of Iowa. After graduation she taught school in a log school house near Davenport, Ia. In 1865 she married John S. McHarg of an old Davenport family. They resided on a farm near Victor for 35 years. To this union were born seven children, two passing away at the age of 4 and 6. Five children are living: Lorena E. Park of Victor; May H. Hall of Iron Mountain, Mich.; Isabel McHarg of Des Moines; J Edward McHarg of Carnforth and T. J. McHarg of Weldon, Iowa. Her husband passed away in 1904. After his death, Mrs. McHarg moved to Des Moines where she lived the remaining 27 years of her life. Besides her children, she is survived by 17 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, who mourn her passing. She was a devoted wife and mother and an earnest Christian, taking very ardent interest in her church and Sunday school work. She was constant in attending both as long as her health permitted. In early childhood, she gave her heart and life to God and joined the Methodist church at Victor. She continued this membership in the church of her choice at Des Moines until the day of her death on Jan. 28, 1934. She was a member of the Abigail Adams chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and of the Women's Relief Corps of Des Moines. She enjoyed the friendships of her old friends and neighbors, and was ever ready to help in time of sickness and sorrow. She was fond of reading and took a keen interest in the political situations of her country, passing through stirring times in her long life of 89 years. After a brief and severe illness of four days, she passed to her Heavenly Home, falling asleep surrounded by her children and saying "All through the years, I have fought the good fight, I know I have kept the faith and that I have a crown of rejoicing laid up for me in my Heavenly Home." Funeral services were held at one o'clock Wednesday from the M. E. Church in Victor. Rev. C. R. Zimmerman of Marengo conducted the services, assisted by Rev. Howard P. Young. Pall bearers were John Bohstedt, J. C. Mueller, Clarence Beran, Harry Muller, Alton Stanbro and Frank Nace. Interment was made in the family lot in I.O.O.F. cemetery.
