Description	:	WORLD WAR I VETERAN John Stepper was born at Ashley in the state of North Dakota, on 21 September 1892. He is the son of Gottlieb and Kathrina (Nitschke) Stepper. John was a white male, five foot seven inches in height, with a dark complexion. On 28 March 1918 John was inducted into the United States Army at Ashley, north Dakota. From the date of his induction until 20 April 1918 , he served with the 163rd Depot Brigade at Fort Dodge, Iowa. Then he was transfered to Company M, 138th Infantry, where he served until his discharge.... Read More	WORLD WAR I VETERAN John Stepper was born at Ashley in the state of North Dakota, on 21 September 1892. He is the son of Gottlieb and Kathrina (Nitschke) Stepper. John was a white male, five foot seven inches in height, with a dark complexion. On 28 March 1918 John was inducted into the United States Army at Ashley, north Dakota. From the date of his induction until 20 April 1918 , he served with the 163rd Depot Brigade at Fort Dodge, Iowa. Then he was transfered to Company M, 138th Infantry, where he served until his discharge. During a portion of his service, from 2 May 1918 until 28 April 1919, John served overseas. He was honorably discharged on 12 May 1919, at Fort Dodge in Iowa, as a Private. After returning home from the service, on 24 January 1923, John married Rosalind Isabel Helmer in North Dakota. Together they had eight children: Elenor Stepper (1925), Lioyd Stepper (1927), Colin Stepper (1928), Luetta (Stepper) Fulton (1930), William Stepper (1933), Barbara (Stepper) Mitchell (1934), Iris (Stepper) Venable (1936), and Joyce Stepper (1943). The same year that Joyce was born Rosalind passed away, on 17 September 1943. John spent some time at the Veterans Administration Hospital, where he submitted a application to be admitted to the Washington Veterans Home in Retsil, Washington. On 27 December 1963 John was admitted, after being released from the Veterans Administation Hospital in Seattle. John resided at the home as a hospital patient until 6 January 1964, when he was again transfered to the Veterans Administration Hospital. He returned to the Home on 9 January 1964. Then on 7 January 1965, at the age of seventy two, John passed away at the Washington Veterans Home Hospital. He is buried in the Home's cemetery.
