Description	:	From the Skidmore, Missouri New Era, May 6, 1915, page 1: "John Stokes Mitchell was born in Smith Mills, Kentucky, Nov. 11, 1860, and died at his home, 2 1/2 miles northwest of Skidmore, Mo., May 1, 1915, aged 54 years, 5 months, and 20 days. He came to Rockport, Mo., in November 1882, thence to a farm 5 1/2 miles northwest of Skidmore and in the year 1900 moved to his present home. September 17, 1893 he was united in marriage to Miss May E. Stevenson who passed to her reward Sept. 8, 1905. To this union were born... He came to Rockport, Mo., in November 1882, thence to a farm 5 1/2 miles northwest of Skidmore and in the year 1900 moved to his present home. September 17, 1893 he was united in marriage to Miss May E. Stevenson who passed to her reward Sept. 8, 1905. To this union were born four children, Rachel who followed her mother to her heavenly home more than a year ago, Nola, Bessie and Basil. Jan. 15, 1908 the deceased was united in marriage to Miss Mollie Larkham and to this union one child, Lucile, was born. Brother Mitchell was converted and united with the Baptist church at Walkups Grove in 1888. After his marriage he transferred his membership to the Methodist Episcopal church at Salem and later moved the same to Skidmore. Brother Mitchell was a good neighbor, an industrious farmer and a true Christian gentleman. He was a good home maker for no man ever loved his family more than he. In his departure the community, the home and the church has sustained an irreparable loss. But we believe that our loss is his eternal gain. While the family and friends bemoan his fate, and the community has lost one of its most valuable citizens, we must not overlook the fact that the sorrow does not extend beyond the loss of a kind and grateful father, for as is in many cases, death has not brought the sorrow of want and poverty, but is taken care of by a good estate of land, property and life insurance. No man can say of him that during the time God gave him to live, he laid nothing in the storehouse for the dependent and loved ones. Funeral was held at Skidmore in the M. E. Church Monday at 3 p.m. The services were conducted by Rev. C. H. Sauceman assisted by Rev. Barrett and Rev. Welton. Burial in Masonic Cemetery."
