John Stutt, one of the fine old men of Wayne township, died, last Saturday afternoon, December 9th, of pluero-pneumonia, at the age of 78 years. Mr. Stutt was seriously ill for some week s and hope for his recovery was weak for several days previous to his death. Mr. Stutt was born in Hanover, Germany, in 1838. He came to the United States previous to the Civil War and enlisted in Company D. of the 84th Illinois Volunteer Infantry In 1801. He was discharged in 1802 and re-enlisted in the Marino Brigade, where he served until 1804, He saw some severe service, including the battles of Pittsburg Landing and the Siege of Vicksburg. After the close of the war he came to Jones County, and in 1800 returned to Germany to marry Miss Mary Harms. Mrs. Stutt survives her husband. Mr. Stutt was the father of seven children: J. H. J. Stutt, of Monticello; John J. Stutt Jr., of Weyburn, Saskatchewan, Canada; Herman, Edward, William and Georg e Stutt, and a daughter, Mrs. Henry Folkers, of Wayne township. Mr. Stutt was a highly respected citizen, who bad the esteem and confidence of his neighbors. He bought his farm in Wayne township when land was cheap and by his Industry accumulated a competence. He brought his children up in the habits of industry. He lived a frugal, honest life and passed to his reward with the faith that his Church had planted in bis heart at an early age. Jones county loses one of its best builders in the death of John Stutt, more than that it loses one of Its best citizens. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Mardorf, at the Wayne church, at one-thirty, yesterday afternoon. Interment was had at the Wayne cemetery.
