Lyster, a fireman on the Santa Fe was killed on the cut-off from Lawrence to Ottawa, near Lawrence, last Friday evening. He was shaking the grates of the engine and in some manner lost his balance and fell out of the cab, his head striking a tie near the track. The train was going at full speed and he struck the tie with such force that his skull was crushed. He lived till the next morning but never regained consciousness. John Blake was the engineer but he was busy about his engine and did not see Lyster fall. He finally missed him and stopped the train. The train was backed down the track a short distance and John was found lying by the tie on which he had fallen. He was sent to the hospital at Topeka where he died about 4 o'clock Saturday morning. The remains were brought back to Chanute, Sunday evening where he has lived for many years. The Workmen, of which lodge he was a member, met the remains at the depot and escorted them to his home on Highland Ave. He was buried by the lodge in Elmwood cemetery, Monday afternoon, a very large crowd attending. John Lyster was a popular young railroad man whom everybody liked. He was pleasant and cheerful at all times. He leaves a wife and his father who lived with him here. He had only recently been tansferred to the Lawrence run and had not moved his goods from Chanute. The accident can be accounted for only on the ground that there was some defect about the shaking aparatus (sic) to the grate and as he threw his weight on it something gave away and threw him with great force out of the cab.
