Description	:	Bio: From Hunwardsen Family History "John", his brother "Ed", and their friend, John Schladetsky, came to the United States in March 1885. The voyage across the Atlantic was quite an adventure. They sailed from Bremerhafen and after they were out a few days, the ship sprang a leak. They were able to reach a port in England, where the ship was repaired. (This was a week's delay) My father received his citizenship paper on October 24, 1892, from Jackson County, Iowa. Read More	Bio: From Hunwardsen Family History "John", his brother "Ed", and their friend, John Schladetsky, came to the United States in March 1885. The voyage across the Atlantic was quite an adventure. They sailed from Bremerhafen and after they were out a few days, the ship sprang a leak. They were able to reach a port in England, where the ship was repaired. (This was a week's delay) My father received his citizenship paper on October 24, 1892, from Jackson County, Iowa. It was one of his prized possessions. My father spent several years in Paxton, Nebraska with is sister, Emma Feddersen, and her husband and their family when they were homesteading there. Because of several years of severe drought and crop failures, they returned to Iowa by covered wagons. Travel was slow and rugged, and it took four weeks to reach Grandfather Hunwardsen's farm north of Oxford Junction, Iowa. When it was possible, they spent the night in a rancher's yard. After his return to Iowa, my father helped grandfather with the farming and came with our grandparents when they moved to a farm southwest of Lost Nation, Iowa. The Hunwardsen family thus were neighbors of my mother's parents, who had come to the United States from Germany in 1880. So, to show neighborliness, mother's parents brought them food, etc. Dad used to tease Mother, saying she "won" him with the good lunches they brought as they worked in the field! Anyway, Dad and Mother were married in 1897 at the Lutheran church in Lost Nation, Iowa. They established their home with mother's parents, living on that farm until 1913 when they moved to Lost Nation.
