Thomas Ferdinand Hunwardsen was born May 19, 1857, at Hattstedt, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and emigrated to the United States in 1883, settling at Oxford Junction, Iowa. In 1885 he was married to Fredericka Paulsen, and they made their home at Oxford Junction until 1905, when the Hunwardsen family moved to a farm south of Midway. After operating the farm for 13 years, he retired and moved to Sioux City, where he remained until his death. The bereaved include his widow, seven sons, John of Moline, Illinois; August of Cushing, Iowa; Henry of Danbury, Iowa; Howard of El Cerrito, California; and Thomas, Otto and Edward of Sioux City, Iowa; three daughters, Mrs. Meta Albers and Mrs. Linda Petersen of Danbury, Iowa, and Mrs. Mary Strackbein of Sioux City, Iowa; two brothers, Henry of Clarence, Iowa, and Edward of Oxford Junction; a sister, Mrs. Emma Feddersen of Clarence and 18 grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Nelson-Berger funeral home at Sioux City and at 2 p.m. in the Midway Lutheran Church, which Mr. Hunwardsen attended faithfully while residing at Midway. The Rev. G.A. Matthaidess of Sioux City officiated and burial was in Midway Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Chris Kettelsen and son, Jens, H.C. Petersen and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Riessen of Anthon were among the many persons who attended the services at Midway to pay their last respects to a man of splendid Christian character whom they had loved dearly. Despite the cold weather, the church was crowded to capacity with friends and relatives, attesting to the high esteem in which Mr. Hunwardsen was held. ∼From "Hunwardsen Family History 1833-1978: the genealogy of the Hunwardsen family" compiled by Anita Hunwartzen Decker: Ferdined Thomas was born May 19, 1857 at Wittlund, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Sponsors of his baptism were Johann Martin Hunwartsen, Daniel and Poppe "Chatherina" Johannsen. "Uncle Tom" was the first of grandfather's family to come to the United States. He came to Lyons, Iowa in 1883 and worked for awhile in the Charlotte and Goose Lake areas. Later he came to Oxford Junction, working on a farm near Oxford Mills for a Mr. Lathrop. On December 8, 1885, he was married to Freidericka Paulsen (born February 7, 1864 at Husum, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany) at Oxford Junction, Iowa. Aunt "Rica" often told about the day they moved to the farm where they began "housekeeping." Of course there was a lot of help from friends, one of whom was a practical joker. As Aunt Rica was preparing sandwiches and coffee for lunch, this man got up on the roof of the house and covered the chimney with a blanket, thus filling the house with smoke. That man received no lunch! The family lived on several farms in the area, the of which was about four miles southwest of Oxford Junction. All the children (except their youngest) attended Dayton Valley School, northeast of Clarence, in Cedar County, Iowa. After farming approximately eighteen years in the Oxford Junction vicinity, the family moved to Woodbury County, Iowa where they farmed in the Battle Creek area. Upon their retirement, they moved to Sioux City, Iowa. Uncle Tom died November 12, 1932 and Aunt Rica on September 27, 1936.
