Campbell was born in Somerset county, Penn., Dec. 28, 1842, and died July 26, 1917, at his home in Weaver township, Humboldt county, Iowa. He leaves to mourn his loss a loving wife and two children John A. Campbell, and Mrs. Mary M. Joiner, also four grandchildren and two great grand children who will sadly miss him. Four other children two boys and two girls preceded him into the better world. Mr. Campbell was a great sufferer for eight long months but he bore it all patiently and always had a smile and a cheery word for those around him and was so hopeful of his recovery. He was a great lover of children and always enjoyed their company. He also loved flowers and appreciated those brought him during his illness. Mr. Campbell moved with his parents to Jackson county, Iowa when eleven years old and from there he enlisted October 10, 1861, in Company I of the 12th Iowa Volunteers and served until Oct. 20, 1866 being mustered in at Dubuque and out at Memphis, Tenn. He was in the battles of Ft. Donald and Shiloh and at the latter was taken prisoner first at Memphis and afterward at Tuscaloosa and Andersonville. After being exchanged he participated in the campaigns of Vicksburg, Jackson, Tupelo, Blakely, Pinckney, and a number of other battles. He was not once wounded but at one time narrowly escaped it, a ball grazing his side. He served as 1st corporal and the last year was wagon master in a division train. At the close of the war he returned to Jackson county and remained three years during which time he was married to Sarah A. Shinkle. Mr. Campbell was a staunch Republican all hi life. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. As a citizen he was popular through out and was esteemed by all who knew him.
