He was a former chief Financial officer of Cummins Engine Company, an economist, a venture capitalist, and an educator. He was a former chief Financial officer of Cummins Engine Company, an economist, a venture capitalist, and an educator. Born Oct. 10, 1932, in Fort Wayne, he was the son of Harry H. and Ruth (Greer) Hackett. He was a graduate of North Manchester High School and received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Indiana University in 1954 and a Master's of Business Administration in 1958. In 1961, he earned a PhD in Finance and Economics from Ohio State University. He served as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956, including one year as an Armored Reconnaissance Platoon Leader in the 14th Armored Cavalry Regiment, Second Battalion, 7th Army stationed in West Germany. He became a Research Economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland in 1960 and later became Assistant Vice President and Economist. In January of 1965, he accepted the position of Economist and Director of Long Range Planning at Cummins Engine Company, manufacturer of diesel engines headquartered in Columbus, Ind. In 1968, he was promoted to Vice President of Finance. In 1974, he became Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and a member of the Board of Directors. From 1971 to 1977, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. He also served on several advisory committees for the State of Indiana including; Marble Hill Nuclear Power Plant Evaluation Committee; Indiana Banking Reform Committee; Indiana Public Utility Reform Committee; and the Indiana Tax & Budget Advisory Committee. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Wabash National Corporation. He served on the boards of other publicly traded companies, including Ball Corporation, Meridian Insurance Corporation (acquired by State Auto Insurance) and Ransburg Corporation (acquired by Illinois Tool Works). He retired from Cummins Engine Company in 1988 and became Vice President of Finance and Administration at Indiana University-Blooming-ton. He also served as an adjunct member of the faculty of the Department of Economics. In June of 1991, he became Managing General Partner of CID Equity Partners of Indianapolis, a venture capital company that he helped organize in 1981. He retired from CID in January of 2002. He and his wife moved to Keene, N.H, in 2004. He authored or co-authored books, chapters and periodicals on economic and corporate finance. He authored a fictional history of the rise and decline of a Midwestern company and its community. The book is entitled "Race to the Bottom" and was published by Authorhouse. From 2004 until the time of his death, he was adjunct faculty at Keene State College in Keene, N.H., where he taught Economics and Finance. He was a member of the Board of Directors of New Hampshire Public Radio (NHPR) and served on the Board of Trustees of Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen, Mich. He also served on the Visioning Committee for the Master Plan for the city of Keene. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ann Thompson, Hackett (originally of Marion); four children, Jane McManus of Evansville, Ind., David Hackett of Trinity, Fla., Sarah Sandback of Hancock, N.H., and Peter Hackett of Albuquerque, N.M.; and nine grandchildren. Memorial service is 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 29, 2010, in the Alumni Center at Keene State College, 229 Main St., Keene, with a reception to follow. Friends are invited. Arrangements for a memorial service in June of 2011 in Columbus, Ind. are incomplete. Interment will take place at the family lot in Glenwood Cemetery, Roanoke, Ind. In lieu of flowers, gifts be made in memory of Mr. Hackett to the Leelanau Conservancy, 105 North First St., Leland, MI 49654, or to the Indiana Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, 620 Ohio St., Indianapolis, IN 46202 or Hospice at Home Healthcare and Community Services, 312 Marlborough St., Keene, NH, 03431.
