Description	:	John Thomas Packer attended the public schools where he was born, and Hopedale College in Harrison County, Ohio. After leaving school he assisted his father with farming operations. While they raised livestock primarily on the farm, they also had produce and fruits, which had to be loaded on wagons and delivered to the "Farmer's Market" in Wheeling, West Virginia. After John's marriage to Ruth Atkinson on March 9, 1870, they came to Marietta Township, Marshall County, Iowa, to make their home. They lived with the Tomlinson's for a temporary period while they could establish a home for themselves. It was a modest one, neat and well-kept, on eighty acres of land. John continued the practice he had learned from his father, that is, he delivered produce from his farm to the patrons in Marshalltown on Saturdays. John and Ruth were active in the affairs of the community, such s the Hicksite Quaker Church, the Pyle School or District No. 4 of Marietta Township, and the Republican Party. John and Ruth had 11 children: Erwin M; Mary Ella; Asenath M; Franklin W; Alice Grace; Elwood; Joseph Howard; Horace Raley; Emmet J; Kersey Daniel and Josephine Ruth. When their youngest child, Josephine entered nurses training and was gone from home, John and Ruth went to live with their daughter, Alice Collins, at Clemons, Iowa. After Ruth's death in 1918, Jhn lived with Kersey, their youngest son, who ws farming the home place in Marietta Township. When thi farm was sold and Kersey moved away, John made his home with his son Howard at Clemons, and he remained there until his death in 1925. John's funeral was the last service held in this Quaker Church. Although it had fallen into disuse, it was especially opened because John had worshiped there for so many years. A short time after his funeral, the building was destroyed by fire.∼From the 1912 book Past and Present of Marshall County, Iowa, Volume 2, pages 1094-1095: JOHN T. PACKER. Perhaps more people have been sent by the old Buckeye state into Marshall county, Iowa, than have come from any other section of the national union and it goes without saying that they have been of inestimable value in building up this favored section of the great Hawkeye commonwealth. Of this number John T. Packer, one of Marietta township's highly respected farmers, should be mentioned, for he has been in our midst over forty years, during which time he has seen and taken part in the wonderful growth of the county, has lived to see the wild, sparsely settled prairie covered with fertile farms and beautiful residences, and while he has been an interested spectator he has not been content merely to look on the work of others, but has assisted himself in the general progress of the county. Mr. Packer was born in Jefferson county, Ohio, December 12, 1848, and he had the advantages of an excellent education, much better, in fact, than the average man of those early days. After attending the public schools he took a course in Hopedale College, in Harrison county, Ohio. After leaving school he turned his attention to farming which he has made his life work. He came to Iowa in 1870 and located in Marietta township, Marshall county, where he has since remained. He has eighty acres of good land which he has kept well improved and on which he has made a very comfortable living, and he has a very cozy home. Politically, Mr. Packer is a Republican and has always been interested in the success of his party. He has been school director and president of the local school board, and, being a strong advocate of educational movements, he has long been interested and active in school work. He and his family are members of the Friends church. On March 9, 1870, Mr. Packer was united in marriage with Ruth Atkinson, who was born in Belmont county, Ohio, March 8, 1852, the daughter of Daniel and Rachael Atkinson, the father a native of North Carolina and the mother of Ohio. They settled in Belmont county, Ohio, and there spent the remainder of their lives. Of their family of three children, two daughters are living. Mr. Atkinson was an anti-slavery man and a Republican, and he and his wife belonged to the Friends church. Eleven children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Packer, namely: Erwin M. is in the horse business on his homestead in Montana; Mary Ella is the wife of L.V. Eaton, of Central City, Nebraska; Asenath is the wife of John H. Carter, of Carrington, North Dakota; Franklin W. is farming in Hardin county, Iowa; Alice G. is the wife of Lyman J. Collins, of Liberty township; Elwood E. is farming in Hardin county, Iowa; J. Howard is farming in Bangor township, this county; Horace R. is also farming in Bangor township; Emmett J. is living at home; Kersey D. and Josephine R. are also members of the family circle
