Description	:	Erwin Milton Packer was the oldest of eleven children, born to John T and Ruth Atkinson Packer at Marshalltown, Iowa. Theirs was a loving Quaker home. Erwin attended the one-room grade school, christened "Hazel City College" by the students and spend one year at the Academy in Albion, Iowa. Read More	Erwin Milton Packer was the oldest of eleven children, born to John T and Ruth Atkinson Packer at Marshalltown, Iowa. Theirs was a loving Quaker home. Erwin attended the one-room grade school, christened "Hazel City College" by the students and spend one year at the Academy in Albion, Iowa. Erwin set out to find new adventures and landed in Montana in 1897. He wanted to be part of the changes in settling the country. Erwin was good with horses and one of his early jobs was freighting the lumber out to the north side of the Sweet Grass Hills for building homes and shelter for the animals. Erwin married his beloved Martha Suckow at her home on March 12, 1914. To this union were born Marie Ruth - January 8, 1915; Doris Matilda, March 2, 1917; Bruce Lloyd, November 22, 1918; Cora Mae (Brownie), July 12, 1921; and Dorothy Ann, April 12, 1925. Erwin Packer was a pioneer of the Big Sage community north of Rudyard. He had a weak heart due to a bad case of flu and pneumonia. Mr. Packer died suddenly at his farm home about 8:20 o'clock Saturday night after an illness of about 4 hours. Death resulted from heart disease from which he had suffered for some time. He went to meet his Lord at the age of 63. Due to the snow storm, it was impossible to get to Rudyard until late Sunday and the body was not brought to Havre until Monday afternoon. Funeral services have not been arranged, but will probably be held late this week. Mr. Packer is survived by his wife and five children; Marie, Doris, Bruce, Cora May (Brownie) and Dorothy; by two brother-in-laws, Al and E. Suckow of the Big Sage community, who are away at present. From Martha Packer's scrapbook: LAST RITES HELD FOR E.M. PACKER FUNERAL SERVICES FOR THE LATE ERWIN M. PACKER WERE HELD SATURDAY AFTERNOON FROM HIS HOME 25 MILES NORTH OF RUDYARD, WHERE A HOST OF FRIENDS FILLED THE HOUSE. THE REV. H. RITTER CONDUCTED THE SERVICES. "ROCK OF AGES" AND "JESUS, LOVER OF MY SOUL' WERE SUNG BY MR. AND MRS. ASPEVIG OF RUDYARD; MRS MILLS, MRS BECK, AND D.T. SWIFT SINGING "SOMEDAY THE SILVER CORD WILL BREAK." PALLBEARS WERE ALBERT LINCOLN, LESTER VAN WECHEL, CHARLES MILLS, OLE SELMYHR, NORMAN KAERCHER, AND DELBERT SWIFT. HE WAS LAID TO REST IN THE GRACE CHAPEL CEMETERY. ERWIN M. PACKER WAS BORN NOVEMBER 20, 1980, AT MARSHALLTOWN, IA. WHERE HE GREW TO MANHOOD. IN 1897 HE CAME TO MONTANA WHERE HE HAD GONE THROUGH THE HARDSHIP OF PIONEER LIFE, MEETING THE CHANGING CONDITIONS OF THE COUNTRY WITH A STEADFASTNESS WHICH HIS NEIGHBORS SAID, "MARKED HIM AS A MAN AMONG MEN." HE WAS MARRIED TO MARTHA M. SUCKOW ON MARCH 12, 1914. TO THIS UNION WAS BORN FIVE CHILDREN: MARIE, DORIS, BRUCE, CORA MAE, AND DOROTHY, ALL OF WHOM, WITH THEIR MOTHER, SURVIVE HIM. THREE SISTERS AND SIX BROTHERS ALSO SURVIVE HIM, LIVING AT SUCH DISTANCE THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO ATTEND THE FUNERAL. HIS NEIGHBORS SPEAK OF THE PASSING OF "ONE OF OUR FINEST NEIGHBORS AND CITIZENS, A MAN WHO STOOD FOR TRUTH AND RIGHTEOUSNESS," A FRIEND "THROUGH PROSPERITY AND ADVERSITY," WHO IN HIS COMMUNITY STOOD FOR ALL THAT WAS THE BETTERMENT OF HIS FELLOWMEN, "THE DOOR OF HIS HOUSE STOOD OPEN WITH HOSPITALITY," HE AND HIS WIFE HAVING MADE, "A BEAUTY SPOT ON THE PRAIRIE."
