(8) Notes from Gerald Rule, received from Margaret Rule and her mother Minnie Davie Rule (included on an Ancestry family tree by Cara Rule), that John had 3 brothers (William, James, and Alonzo) and a sister (Mary). Family genealogists have attempted to identify John's parents for many, many years. In late 2019, this researcher found a possibility, NOT CONCLUSIVELY PROVEN, but suggested by various records. The puzzle pieces: (1) James Davie, b. 10 Apr 1820 in England, died 23 Nov 1911 in Ingham, Michigan. His death certificate identifies his parents as (____) Davie and Elizabeth Turner (State of Michigan, Certificate of Death, No. 13, James Davie). This grabbed my attention because of the mother's maiden name, and the common practice of using the mother's maiden name as a given or middle name for a child: Elizabeth Turner, and John Turner Davie. (2) Marriage record for Elizabeth Turner and William Davie, 19 Nov 1820 in Burrington, Devon, England ("England, Select Marriages, 1538-1973," Ancestry). (3) England Census 1841 in Burrington, Devon, England: William Davie, age 45, farmer, with Elizabeth (40), John (15), James (14), Thomas (12), Elon (9), Mary (6), Edwin (3). Baptism record for William Davie (22 Nov 1796 in Burrington, Devon) gives the correct age for this census. Elizabeth's baptism record has date of 23 Oct 1798 in Burrington, Devon, which would make her age 43, not 40. Baptism records have not been found yet for the children, but given the age discrepancy for Elizabeth, some or all of the children's ages might be off as well (not uncommon in census records). (4) From the list of siblings in Gerald Rule's note (see Source section above), the 1841 family has John, James, and Mary. No one named Alonzo Davie fitting this family was found in England records currently available online, but he is possibly Elon Davie. Missing from Gerald's list in the 1841 census is William, who may have been one of the other 2 sons (given name for Thomas or Edwin, who perhaps was called by his middle name to differentiate from his father). (5) After his arrival in the United States (1856, per the 1900 census), James Davie lived in first in Jackson County and then in Ingham County, Michigan (census records 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910). Hannah Hoskins, wife of John Turner Davie, married in 1842 and was living in 1850 in Jackson Co., MI with her first husband (Jonathan Rogers), and married John Turner Davie about 1851, probably in that county. James Davie arrived in that county approx. 4 years later, perhaps because his older brother had been there? Again, this is very circumstantial but is the first promising lead found after many years of searching. Research will continue to look for more definite proof.
