Gee, Carroll County loses a lifelong resident, a prominent citizen and an outstanding figure in the community life and in political circles. Mr. Gee Died at his home near Colburn Wednesday morning at eleven o’clock. He has been an invalid for the past four years. He has been bedfast for several months and has had the constant devoted attention of his wife and his daughter, Mrs. Auda Studebaker. Mr. Gee was born in Democrat Township, Carroll County, Indiana on December 21, 1834.He was the son of Andrew and Elizabeth Gee who emigrated from Ohio to Carroll County in 1829, making the trip overland in a covered wagon. Andrew Gee was one of the committee which gave Democrat Township its name. In 1852, Mr. Gee and the late Charles Brough, of this city, went to California where they worked as miners in the gold fields. The friendship between these two ‘shipmates’ lasted until the death of Mr. Brough. Mr. Gee also spent some time in Oregon. He then returned to Carroll County and purchased two hundred acres of land which he cleared and on which he has lived ever since his return from California. In 1879, he married Anna Martin, and to them four children were born: Edward, who now lives in Altoona, Pennsylvania; Samuel and Charles, who reside on the home place, and one daughter who died in infancy. His wife passed away after a few years of married life. On November 24, 1886, he married Isabelle Schnepp, to them were born two children: Auda who lives in Indianapolis and Oscar of Delphi, Indiana. He also leaves a brother, Charles Gee of West Baden, who is now the last surviving member of the family of twelve children of Andrew and Elizabeth Gee. Mr. Gee accumulated much land throughout the years and made substantial improvements upon it. He became one of Carroll County’s wealthiest farmers but in winning material success, he always took time to help in all lines of community welfare and to aid the poor and the less fortunate. He was a Democrat in politics, always a leader but never asking for an office from the party which he favored. Although eighty-nine years of age, frail and weak form long suffering, he was most patient during his last illness and was always appreciative of those who cared for him through his declining years. John T. Gee will be greatly missed, but the principles for which he stood will live through the years and will be a worthy example for his children and his children’s children. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at the Lutheran Church in Colburn, Indiana. The Reverend Edward Cunningham, of Indianapolis, Indiana, a pastor of the Universalist Church, of which Mr. Gee was a member, officiated at the services.
