Description	:	With the death of J.V. Hoon, at Savage on April 24, Richland County loses a pioneer resident and another veteran of the great war between the states answered the final summons. Mr. Hoon was born in Newton Falls, Trumbull, Ohio, February 25, 1843 and enlisted January 16, 1864 in company K, 54th Regt., of Ohio Volunteers, serving until the close of the war in the command of General Sherman, and took part in the grand review held at the close of the war in Washington and soon after returning to private life moved to Iowa. Mr. Hoon was born in Newton Falls, Trumbull, Ohio, February 25, 1843 and enlisted January 16, 1864 in company K, 54th Regt., of Ohio Volunteers, serving until the close of the war in the command of General Sherman, and took part in the grand review held at the close of the war in Washington and soon after returning to private life moved to Iowa. Then years ago Mr. Hoon moved to Richland Country. John Valentine Hoon was married to Elsfa Robinson January 6, 1864 and ten children were born to them of whom seven are now living, three sons, Wm., Edwin and John J., and four daughters, Mrs. Walter Scott and Mrs. C. Messer of Savage, Mrs. Henry Feige of Moorhead, Iowa, and Mrs. Sarah Myers of Mondamin, Iowa. Besides the seven surviving children, Mr. Hoon leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, 26 grand children and 20 great grandchildren. His father was William Hoon (1810-1878) and his mother was Sarah Oviatt (1818-1878). According to the Official Roster of Soldiers from the State of Ohio, he inlisted in Co K, Ohio 5th infantry regiment on 8 Feb 1864. He mustered out 12 Jul 1865. Mr. Hoon was given full military burial and firing squad was from Richland Post of the American Legion. Internment was at Savage cemetery.
