He appears to be in the 1830 census for same township as Jonas Vanostrand, 20 to 30 years old with a female of same age bracket, and male child under age 5. " ------------------------ Page 473, Portrait & Biographical Album, Pub. 1890. JOHN VAN NOSTRAND was born 1 Sept. 1800 in Westmoreland County, Penn. In Ashland County, Ohio, he married MISS. ELIZA GRIBBEN, native of Penn., but of Irish descent, her parents having been born in Ireland. His death occurred on the 6th of April 1859 after an eight-years' residence in Iowa. His wife was called home about three years previous, dying in November 1855 (sic. 1856), at the age of 54 years. They had four sons and three daughters, but only three are now living: WILLIAM, a resident farmer of Decatur County, Iowa (sic. William Van Nostrand ); AMANDA, wife of JOHN BIRKHIMER, whose home is in Fremont County, Iowa; CLARK VAN NOSTRAND, Sec. 18, Buchanan Twp., Jefferson Co., was born in Ashland County, Ohio, Jan. 12, 1831; married, 23 April 1859, MISS SARAH WHITING. Their children: EMMA, married BENJAMIN L. GOSSICK, farmer of Buchanan Township; ANDREW B., Colorado; and LEWIS W. at home. ----- Note: According to the family data sheet on file at the Fairfield Public Library, John remarried following the death of his first wife Eliza. He reportedly married Lydia Hitchcock Mallett on Jun 14, 1857. She was previously married to Gordon T Mallett, who died in December 1855. She was then buried in the same plot as Gordon T Mallett in this cemetery.
