During the decade of the 1960's the headstone inscription was read by local genealogists and the death date was evidently legible enough to read as Jan. 20, 1873. The headstone inscription for Jane was and is quite weathered. During the decade of the 1960's the headstone inscription was read by local genealogists and the death date was evidently legible enough to read as Jan. 20, 1873. The aged information was, however, then and now, quite weathered and interpreted as giving her age at death as 25, leading some to calculate her DOB as 1848 or so. However, it now appears that Jane was living in the home of her brother Clark Van Nostrand and his new wife Sarah (married just the year before, in 1859) in Buchanan Township in Jefferson county, Iowa, as of the June 14, 1860 U. S. Census. His surname was listed as "Vanostrand" instead of "Van Nostrand", however, which may have led family researchers to overlook that household in searches and know the family relationships. See the attached photo of this 1860 U. S. Census report for the entry for Jane on line 15. That entry clearly notes her age as 22, which would thus provide a DOB of about 1838 (rounding could mean 1837, but for this purpose will use 1838). Her marriage to Loren Clark on June 21, 1860 would thus mean that she was of legal age, though her age was not listed on the marriage record. If the aged inscription was actually 35 instead of 25 then the DOB of 1838 would be best considered for her DOB. This memorial is being changed to have the DOB be 1838 instead of 1848, as/of Sept. 13, 2018. Using the 1860 U.S. Census as a guide, the DOB location Ohio is also being added to this memorial. These changes may affect searches and reference for Jane in any number of other online sources and Ancestry family trees, but these changes are now believed by this contributor to be most credible. ----------------------- Daughter of John Van Nostrand and Eliza Gribben Van Nostrand. Sister of Clark Van Nostrand and Loren Van Nostrand. The family surname for Clark was mis-entered in the 1860 U.S. Census for Blackhawk Township of Jefferson County as "Vanostrand". Other interpretations in other sources are quite likely, so family researchers should use caution. ------------------------ Married to Loren Clark. A family data sheet at the Fairfield Public Library for her father, John Van Nostrand (prepared by a Karen Cler of Lakewood, CO) indicated that Jane married Loren Clark on June 21, 1860. This contributor (Richard K. Thompson) visited the Jefferson County Courthouse on June 4, 2009 and looked up the marriage records: the date of June 21, 1860 is correct. The license #1948 indicates that the marriage was officiated by E.L. Briggs, Minister of the Gospel. There isn't any obituary information to be found for Jane Clark (no 1873 Fairfield area newspapers microfilmed, that is, for reference), nor does the marriage license provide any age information. --------------------------- Evidently, after the death of Jane Van Nostrand Clark on January 20, 1873 Loren went on to remarry to Laura Green. All three are buried in the same plot at Evergreen Cemetery. Four of his children with Laura are also buried at Evergreen Cemetery.
