Read More	Funeral Rites Held For John Stender Services for Mr. Stender, 77, were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 31, at the Massena United Methodist Church with Ken Baird officiating. Mr. Stender died at home in the rural Massena-Cumberland area on Tuesday and had been in failing health for some time. The son of Peter and Julia Larson Stender, he was born in Adams County, November 4, 1905 and was married to Dorothy Barton in Cherokee, Iowa on January 14, 1940. This union was blessed with the birth of 3 sons and 1 daughter: Ernest, Arlo, Kent, and Karen. They farmed in the Massena-Cumberland area since that time. The last 10 years he enjoyed his winters in southern Texas. Those surviving to honor his memory are his loving wife, Dorothy of Massena; his children: Arlo Stender and his wife Mary of Cumberland, Kent Stender and his wife Julia of Massena, and Karen Oathoudt and her husband Dennis of Anita; his grandchildren: Julie Symonds and her husband Curt of Des Moines, Jennifer and John Stender of Cumberland, Kevin, Tamela, Rachel, and Rana Stender all of Massena, Terry, Krista, John Robert, and Jason Oathoudt all of Anita, Tony and Rick Stender both of Massena; and his daughter-in-law, Shirley Stender of Massena. He is also survived by his three sisters, Della Holcomb and her husband Dr. Albert Holcomb of Cedar Rapids, Helen Chester (Mrs. Floyd) of Massena, and Arlene Stender of Atlantic; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Ernest; his parents; his brother, James, and two sisters: Alice Stender and Mabel Boos. Karen McFadden was organist and Johnny and Sue Mitchell, vocalists, sang "I Shall Know Him" and "The Love of God." In charge of the flowers were Harvey and Lola Garside; Don and Marilyn Hilyard, Gene and Shirley Hosfelt, and Minnie Aupperle. Casket bearers were Albert Holcomb, Richard and Dallas Chester, Clayton, Maurice, and Richard Mingus. Interment was in the Victoria Township Cemetery, south of Massena, with the Gauthier Funeral Chapel of Massena in charge of the arrangements.
