Son of Aaron Leetis "Lee" Owen and Olive Dessie Hayhurst OBITUARY THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, December 5, 1996 OWEN John Vernon Owen, son of Lee and Olive (Hayhurst) Owen, was born Oct. 4, 1917 in Corydon. He passed away on Nov. 26, 1996, at his home in Millerton at the age of 79. Vernon was a lifelong resident of Wayne County. He was a dealer for the Rusco Window Company of Des Moines for several years as well as being a self-employed carpenter in the Wayne County area. On Sept. 19, 1937, Vernon was united in marriage to Beatrice McIntosh in Chariton. To this union one son was born, Donald Lee. They made their home in Millerton and on April 4, 1944, Vernon was inducted into the United States Army. Following his discharge, Vernon returned to Millerton. He enjoyed his work as a carpenter and also raising a large garden with his wife, Bea. Vernon was a member of the American Legion Post 68 in Corydon, and a member of the Millerton Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Beatrice in 1993. Vernon is survived by his son Don and wife Karen Owen of Urbandale, and two step-grandsons, Douglas and Steven Spannring, as well as many good friends and neighbors. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, 1996 at the Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton. The Rev. Connie Grandon officiated. Burial was in the Confidence Cemetery. Serving as bearers were Charles Howieson, Merwin Williams, Douglas Spannring, Steven Spannring, Richard Mason, Dennis Ingram and Homer Curtis. Military rites were conducted at the cemetery by American Legion Russell E. Marshall Post 68 of Corydon.
