John was born on February 11, 1922, in Muscatine, the son of Orbry and Lydia Pauly Bryant. He married Phylena Faulkner on October 15, 1949, in Muscatine. She preceded him in death on April 28, 2009. He was a truck driver for Hahn Ready Mix where he had worked full time for 42 years and 18 years part-time. He took flying lessons when he was young. He was a proud member of the Civil Air Patrol in Biloxi, Mississippi. He was a past president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He and Phylena were both recipients of the Volunteer of the Year Award at Crossroads. He enjoyed woodworking, camping, and especially enjoyed gambling. Those left to honor his memory include his children, Lynn Rae Steen and husband, Fred, of Clinton, Mary Jane Knause and husband, Ron, of Muscatine, and John W. Bryant Jr. and wife, Wanda, of Muscatine; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Ethel Allen of Toolsboro, Art Bryant and wife, Carol, of Evansdale, and Shirley Welker and husband, Robert, of Muscatine. John was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four sisters, Florence Foster, Dorothy Miller, Helen Bohling, and Vergie Buchanan, and one granddaughter, Karen Rioux.
