July 17, 1930; pgs 1 & 3. J. W. Gambs Laid To Rest Friday Morning Had Spent Several Years In Oklahoma Panhandle Funeral services were held last Friday morning from the Methodist church for John W. Gambs, former resident of this place, who died here last Wednesday after a long period of sickness. The service was conducted by Rev. W. S. Handy, and arrangements were in the charge of Fred J. Willman, funeral director of Rodney. Among those who were here from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Davenport, and Mr. and Mrs. John A. Davenport, John Wengert, and Martin Uhl of Sioux City, Andy Lee of Moville, and Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Prichard and son Bert of Onawa. Interment was in the Smithland cemetery. John William Gambs, eldest son of John and Charlotte Gambs, was born in Monroe County, Ohio, March 19, 1863 and died in Smithland July 9, 1930. He moved with his parents to Smithland in 1865 and grew to manhood here. He was a member of the first choir and also of the first band organized in the Smithland community. At twenty-one years of age, he became a deputy sheriff and served in that capacity for ten years. He was married February 7, 1883 at Smithland to Libbie B. Sands who survives him. He has lived in the Oklahoma (continued on page three) Panhandle since 1904. He was always active in lodgework, politics and public work and held numerous positions of honor and trust. His life was exemplified by his favorite program, “I want to live in a house by the side of the road, and be a friend of man.” He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Leah Humiston of Vinita, Okla.; two grand daughters, to whom he was more than a father, Miss Ruth Humiston and Mrs. Elmer L. Fowler and two great grand children all of Forgan, Okla. In addition to them, his is survived by two sisters, Mrs. W. C. Hills of Palo Alto, California and Mrs. Wm. Steinhoff of Smithland; one brother, L. N. Gambs of Smithland, besides many other relatives and innumerable friends. -------------------------
