Hafer, son of Robert and Ellen Hafer entered this life at Rainsburg, Bedford Co., Pa., October 16th, 1847, and departed to the realms of immortality December 24th, 1927, aged 80 years, 2 months and 8 days. In early life, with his parents, he moved to Henry County, Illinois. December 25th, 1873, he was married to Miss Hester M. Hammond at Morristown, Ill. From this union there have been nine children, eight of whom are living: Robert, Katherine M. Porter, Nellie M. Yates, Frank A., Lyda, Cleveland, Bessie I. Schupbach and Lela G. Stoldorf. ... There are eighteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Four brothers and four sisters also survive him: Benjamin Hafer of Geneva, Neb., Peter Hafer of Lincoln, Neb., James Hafer of Akron, Col., Joseph Hafer of Geneva, Neb. Mrs. Catherine Ough of Strang, Neb., Maggie smith of Chicago, Mrs. Lottie Eberstein of Boise Idaho, and Miss Ella Hafer of Geneva, Neb. All of these, with the widow, are left to mourn his passing. n the spring of 1881 he moved with his wife and family to a farm three miles east of Geneva where he spent the remainder of his life. A number of years ago he united with the Congregational Church of Geneva, and was a faithful member until his death. He died as he had lived at peace with God and man. His was a long, honorable and useful life, and his a lasting influence in the community. He was a lover of the home and what the home stands for and a lover of his fellowmen. And in his relationship with them he was the: “Courage, that scorns to bend To mean devices for a sordid end. Courage-an independent spark from heaven’s brightest throne By which the soul stands raised triumphant, high, alone. Great in itself, not praises of the crowd Above all vice, it stoops not to be proud. Courage, the mighty attribute of powers above, By which those great in war are great in love. The spring of all brave acts is seated here, As falsehoods draw their sordid birth from fear.” He has gone from among us and we shall see his face no more but we know that death is not a conqueror, for with him it is only a turn in the never-ending stream that leads on to immortality and though he is dead, he shall live again. The funeral service was held at the Congregational Church in Geneva, where many came to pay their last tribute of respect to their one-time neighbor and friend. Rev. David Tudor, the pastor, delivered a very beautiful and touching sermon, in which he brought to the sorrowing friends the thought that the works of the righteous live on. Interment was in the Geneva Cemetery. Mrs. Pearl Brown of Lincoln, Neb., sang, “There Will Be No Night There.” Many beautiful floral tributes were banked around the altar rail. Those from out of town attending the funeral rites were: Edward Hammond, brother of Mrs. Hafer, P. J. Hafer and wife, Mrs. Loper, and daughter Ruby, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Meade, Mrs. Pearl Brown and father, Mr. Whistler of Lincoln, Mrs. A. J. Porter and Mrs. Harvey Miller and P. M. Schupbach of Seward and many other relatives and friends from nearby towns. Mr. Hafer, having been a resident of this county for over forty-six years, was well and favorably known, and those intimately acquainted with him recognized that his life was dominated by the highest precepts and in his dealings with his fellowmen he adhered always to the doctrine of the Golden Rule. He will be missed by a wide circle of friends outside of the family who mourn his passing. The Nebraska Signal December 29th, 1927 page 1.
