Johnston, 79, respected citizen of this county for over 70 years, passed away at his home here, January 6th, following an extended illness. His passing filled his numerous friends and relatives with sorrow. Funeral services were conducted from the Presbyterian Church, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, by the Rev. Thomas R. Brown. Pall bearers were Ed Hannon, Joe J. Johnston, Robert Hicks, William Blakely, Thomas Graham and Charles Sweny. John W. Johnston was born September 22, 1861 in Rock Island County, Ill. and passed away at his home in Montezuma, Iowa on January 6, 1941, at the age of 79 years past. He was but 5 years old when his parents moved to this community and here he spent the remainder of his days. Most of his life was lived on the farm until the year 1920 when he retired and moved to Montezuma. On March 31, 1884, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Hall. To this union five children were born: Joseph W., Elizabeth, John L., Samuel and Francis. In early life Mr. Johnston became a member of the Episcopalian church. After moving to Montezuma, he was a faithful and regular worshiper in the Presbyterian Church and continued so until his death. He was preceded in death by two sons, Samuel and Joseph, and by two sisters and one brother. Mr. Johnston leaves to mourn his departure, his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth McCaw of Montezuma, two sons, John of Iowa City, and Francis of Montezuma. His also survived by nine grandchildren and one great grandson, and by two sisters, Mrs. Josephine Johnston and Mrs. Matilda Rempp, both of Montezuma. Montezuma Republican 9 Jan 1941
