Another of the links which binds the present with the past in this district was severed on Wednesday when the spirit of Mr John Waddell, Sr., took its flight to the realms beyond this world. The deceased was born at Airdie, in Scotland, on January 9th, 1827, and thus on the portals of his eightieth year. he came with his parents to Canada in 1831,and in 1855 he settled on the farm on the eighth line opposite Mr John Steele's now occupied by Mrs Isabella Bowes. later he removed to the farm bought from Mr John Robertson near Leckie's Corners, upon which his son, Thomas, is now living, and here he remained until his removal to Almonte about thirteen years ago, where he has since resided. In 1855 he was married to Miss Jane Bowes, third daughter of Mr Thos Bowes, of Pakenham township. To them a family of nine children were born, five boys and four girls – Alex and Thomas in Ramsay; Mrs T.J. Bowes, Misses Margaret, Jane and Mary, and Messrs James, Robert and John, jr., in Almonte. On Feb 9th of last years Mr and Mrs Waddell celebrated their golden wedding, surrounding by their children and grandchildren in the ranks of whom death had not made a break. Mr Waddell's demise now being the first in the family. His aged partner is seventy-five years of age. The late Mr Waddell was a member of the Reformed Presbyterian church, and his life was one of simple trust in his God and his Saviour. In 1861 he was elected a deacon of the church, and in 1871 he was appointed an elder, both of which offices he filled with the same consistency and faithfulness that characterized his whole life. The funeral takes place from his late residence in New England on Friday at two o'clock to the eighth line cemetery.
