He came to the United States on the ship "City Of Baltimore", landing on August 22, 1865. He said when got to the United States, all the talk was about Abraham Lincoln having been assassinated. Walter went west to Albany County, which he said was still pretty much a wilderness. There he met the widowed Eunice Gilbert (Stark) Miller.
