He graduated from Ridgefield High School in Ridgefield, Washington in 1933. He and his wife Eunice were married for 75 years. He graduated from Ridgefield High School in Ridgefield, Washington in 1933. He and his wife Eunice were married for 75 years. He is survived by 3 daughters; Geraldine (Tom VanGelder), Judith (Frank Lambert). and Mary (Bill Matney). There are 7 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. John was employed in the lumber industry and spent World War ll years working at the Vancouver Shipyards in Vancouver, Washington. He was an excellent athlete, fisherman, bowler, and golfer. He played semi-pro baseball until he was 40 years old. He served as mayor of Ridgefield and was famous for his excellent memory and complete knowledge of the Ridgefield Washington area. Published in The Columbian on May 31, 2020. John's life was chronicled in the Ridgefield Reflections, A Legacy, published in 2011 by the Ridgefield Heritage Committee of Ridgefield, Washington, 98642. From the book, John wrote: "We lived on Cook Street in Ridgefield for 42 years, then moved to Riverview Drive. John retired in 1977. We look west, overlooking Ridgefield, the Bottoms, Batchelor Island and across the Columbia River to Oregon with many ships to watch." The book was written to honor and recognize citizens in our Ridgefield community who have been here for many, many years. We hear their stories, and now those stories are woven into the history of Ridgefield.
