Gilman was born January 19, 1837 in Brooks, Waldo county, Maine, and died at his residence in Mason City, Iowa, January 10, 1892. At the age of 19 he came to East Saginaw, Michigan, where he engaged in the lumber business with his brother Charles C. Gilman. Gilman was born January 19, 1837 in Brooks, Waldo county, Maine, and died at his residence in Mason City, Iowa, January 10, 1892. At the age of 19 he came to East Saginaw, Michigan, where he engaged in the lumber business with his brother Charles C. Gilman. Two years later, on account of failing health, he moved to Dubuque, Iowa, where he engaged in the grain business with the firm Gilman Brothers. With his brother Charles C. Gilman he afterward became interested in the construction of the Central Iowa railway. In 1885 (must be a typo - probably 1875 because he was in Mason City for the 1880 Federal Census) he moved to Mason City and engaged in the wholesale coal trade. Later at the solicitation of his brother he became secretary and treasurer of the International Terra Cotta Lumber Company of Chicago, which position he held at the time of his death. In 1872 he was married to Miss Anna Kennedy who, with four children, survives him. His remains were brought from Mason City to Eldora on Monday, January 11, in charge of an escort of Knight Templars and the funeral services were conducted in the first Congregational Church on Tuesday January 12, the sermon being delivered by Rev. C. H. Marsh pastor of the First M. E. church of Eldora. The services were in charge of St. Aldemar Commandery, of Marshalltown, Iowa, of which deceased was a member. Montague Lodge, A. F. and A. M. of Eldora acting as escort. Deceased was a member of Montague lodge and also of Ever Green Chapter. Deceased enlisted in the 31st Iowa Infantry as a private. On the re-enlistment of his regiment he was detailed to a special service as division quartermaster taking rank at his request as 2nd Lieut. The auditor's report published at the end of the close of the war shows that of all the quartermasters accounts, John W. Gilman's accounts were the only accounts which were found to be absolutely correct."
