Read More	Obituary published in the Arcadia Champion, Arcadia, Nebraska, Friday, June 20, 1919, Page 6, Column 3: "John Welsh, one of the most prominent and honored citizens of Westerville, was born March 4, 1837, died June 4, 1919. He was a native of Ireland, in which country he was reared and educated. At the age of twenty he came to America, making his home in Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties, New York. He was married to Lovina S. Starling December 29, 1868. To this union was born three children, George H., Justin E., and Eva Pearl, now wife of Fred B. Crawford, all of whom with the wife survive him. The children are all located in the vicinity of the parental home. After living an exceptionally active life for three months past four score and two years, like Enoch of old, “He is no more, for God had taken him.” The end came without a moments warning. The passing of Mr. Welsh from this life to his well earned reward “the rest which remaineth for the people of God,” removes one of the most useful, successful and philanthropic men of the country. In the spring of 1880, he with his family removed from New York state to Nebraska, locating near Westerville, where he has since resided. Here he succeeded in developing one of the most modern and attractive homes which is not only prominent for its beauty but for the hospitality of Mr. Welsh and his family. The doors of no home opened more frequently to all classes of people especially to ministers, regardless of creed or denomination. Never did generous hospitality reach a sublimer degree than was manifest by the spirit of this good man, who brought to reality the poet's thought, “I will build my house by the side of the road and be a friend to man.” Mr. Welsh was extremely public spirited, always showing a deep interest in all worthy enterprises pertaining to the community life. The last vision for the future good of Westerville was the building of a Community Church, now being launched by the Methodist Church through the Centenary movement. Mr. Welsh often proved the truth of the words “that to err is human; to forgive is divine.” Being human judgment could not be infallible. Not being divine he could not avoid making some mistakes. Few men have gathered about them a greater circle of friends and few have accomplished more for their immediate neighborhood and a multitude will join in saying that the world is better for he having lived in it; “though being dead, yet speaketh and his words do follow him.” The funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon, June 8th, from the home of the deceased, Rev. G. W. Ballard, pastor of the M.E. Church officiating."
