Born April 29, 1927, in Henry County, he was the son of John Raymond and Nellie Mae Beames Willey. He married Donna Jean Perry on April 9, 1944. She died March 8, 1988. Read More	The Burlington Hawkeye 6/12/00 John Willey John Wendell Willey, 73, of New London, died at 10:23 a.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born April 29, 1927, in Henry County, he was the son of John Raymond and Nellie Mae Beames Willey. He married Donna Jean Perry on April 9, 1944. She died March 8, 1988. He later married Joan Christner Newman on May 20, 1989, in Mount Pleasant. Mr. Willey was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, serving in Japan. He served as streets commissioner and police chief in New London from 1959 to 1982. He continued as streets commissioner until his retirement in April 1989. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Latter-day Saints in Mount Pleasant, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7641 and the Moose Lodge in Burlington. He was a former New London volunteer fireman and served two terms on the New London City Council. He served as co-chair of the Salem Music Festival with his stepson, Gary. He loved music and hosted bluegrass jam sessions in New London for 21 years. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Nancy Adolfson of Burlington and Pat Smith of New London; one son, John Raymond Willey of Albany, Ill.; three stepdaughters, Sheila Carr of Salem, Katie Mitchell of Bonaparte and Connie Dorothy of Van Buren, Ark.; one stepson, Gary W. Newman of Salem; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Alice Lopez of Chicago, Ill.; and one brother, Frank Willey of Montrose. Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and four brothers. Visitation will begin at noon today at Elliott Chapel in New London, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Willey will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Elliott Chapel, with Elder Larry Jannings officiating. Burial will be in Brooks Cemetery, New London, with military rites by VFW Post 7641. A luncheon will follow at the New London VFW. A memorial has been established for Brooks Cemetery.
