Garratt Taken Suddenly By Apoplexy Stroke Takes Life Long Resident of Wayne County; Was Bank Officer John Wesley Garratt, 70 year old stock feeder and director of the Corydon State Bank, died at 2:10 a.m. Tuesday, April 11, 1933. Mr. Garratt's death came suddenly following a stroke of apoplexy suffered between 9 and 10 p.m. Monday at his home five miles northwest of Allerton. Having spent the entire span of his life in this county, Mr. Garratt was widely known here. At one time he was a director of the former Farmer's National Bank of Allerton and has been an active stock feeder on his farm for many years. He was born April 20, 1862. Besides the widow, Mrs. Sarah Hall Garratt, there are two sons surviving, Zell, at home, and Boice, who lives three miles southeast of Allerton. A sister of Mr. Garratt lives in Ames. Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from New Zion Church. *********** The Allerton News, April 27, 1933, Allerton, Iowa Obituary- John W. Garratt, youngest child of James and Delilah Lowe Garratt was born in Wayne County, Iowa, April 20, 1862. He departed this life April 11, 1933, at the age of 70 years, 11 months and 21 days. His father, James Garratt was born in Chestershire, England, April 1, 1817. He came to America in 1842 and first settled in Illinois. In 1854 he came to Iowa, entered some government land in Wayne County, which he improved. Here he spent the remainder of his life. This same land is a part of the farm where the subject of our sketch has spent his entire life. John W. Garratt was united in marriage to Sarah A. Hall October 19, 1899 and to this union two sons were born, Zell K. and Boice J. Zell lives at home. Boice married Miss Marcia M. Brown and lives near Allerton. Mr. Garratt had held various offices of trust in the township and has always been more than willing to do anything for the good of the community. He also gave his service willing to the county, serving as an officer in the Allerton Farmers and Feeders Bank during the entire life of this bank. He then transferred to the Corydon Bank where he became a director with D. L. Murrow, L. C. Neibling, F. R. Fry, C. H. Haughman, D. S. Moore, F. M. West, F. W. Miles, and R. L. Wolfe. He held this position until his death. Mr. Garratt leaves to mourn his going, his family, consisting of his good wife, his two sons, one daughter-in-law, one sister, Mrs. Marry Allen of Ames and many friends. For everyone that really knew Mr. Garratt was his friend and he their friend. The funeral service was held at New Zion Church April 12, 1933, Wednesday at 2 o'clock. The service was conducted by the Reverend Mrs. Wolfe of Lorimor, Iowa, assisted by the Reverend Mr. Jones, pastor of the church. Interment was made in Hazel Dell Cemetery. [This is an error. John W. Garratt is buried in the Allerton Cemetery.]
