Description	:	John Wesley Godfrey, son of Martin M. and Mary Catherine Godfrey, was born Oct 17, 1863, in Marion County, Ia. He died in the Armstrong Nursing Home in Bedford July 10, 1956. In March of 1884, Mr Godfrey, as a young man, went to Frontier County, Nebraska, took homestead preemption and lived there until August, 1890, moving to New Market where he lived the most of the remainder of his life. Read More	John Wesley Godfrey, son of Martin M. and Mary Catherine Godfrey, was born Oct 17, 1863, in Marion County, Ia. He died in the Armstrong Nursing Home in Bedford July 10, 1956. In March of 1884, Mr Godfrey, as a young man, went to Frontier County, Nebraska, took homestead preemption and lived there until August, 1890, moving to New Market where he lived the most of the remainder of his life. Nov 9, 1889, Mr Godfrey was married to Maude E. Herriman of New Market, who died Nov 5, 1905. To this union were born one son, Carl, and two daughters, Lena and Velma. Mr Godfrey was married to Glen L. Journey, Nov 20, 1907. To this union one daughter, Ione, was born. He was converted under the ministry of Rev J.J. Hostetler in February, 1896. He was received into the membership of the New Market Mennonite Brethern in Christ Church (now United Missionary Church) on Feb 28, 1896, being baptized on March 18, 1896. Mr Godfrey was the ordained lifetime deacon of the New Market United Missionary Church and held other offices as long as he was physically able. He was delegate at the Annual Conference of the Nebraska District of the United Missionary Church on different occasions. Mr Godfrey served on the New Market public school board for several years, and also served for a time as town councilman. He leaves his wife, Glen, of New Market; son Carl of Tigard, Ore; daughters Leanna (Mrs Ira Arthur) of Denver, Colo., and Iowa (Mrs Wallace Gray) of Marion, Ia; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, besides nieces and nephews. Also surviving is one sister, Mrs Jennie Bish, in Los Angeles. One daughter, Velma (Mrs) Ralph Bayless preceded her father in death. Mr Godfrey's nephew Frank and niece Ruth (now Mrs Kenneth Reed) lived in the Godfrey home for a number of years, and are listed among the survivors. Funeral services were held in the New Market United Missionary Church July 13. Rev David S. Johnson, pastor of the church, officiated, being assisted by the Rev Lulu Overholt of Shambaugh. Mr and Mrs Horace Stone of Braddyville were singers and were accompanied by Mrs David S. Johnson. Pallbearers were Robert Hamilton, Dewey Ferguson, Wesley Slaight, Marshall Derry, James Pickrel and Ralph Slaight. Interment was in the Memory Cemetery near New Market.
