Description	:	Velma Fern Godfrey, third child of Maude and John Godfrey, was born in New Market on March 21, 1902. She passed away at the Municipal hospital in Clarinda, following a long illness, Friday morning, November 12, 1948, age 46 years, 7 months and 21 days. November 10, 1923, she was united in marriage to Ralph W. Bayles, at Des Moines, Iowa. For several years they made their home in Corning, Iowa, later moving to New Market. Read More	Velma Fern Godfrey, third child of Maude and John Godfrey, was born in New Market on March 21, 1902. She passed away at the Municipal hospital in Clarinda, following a long illness, Friday morning, November 12, 1948, age 46 years, 7 months and 21 days. November 10, 1923, she was united in marriage to Ralph W. Bayles, at Des Moines, Iowa. For several years they made their home in Corning, Iowa, later moving to New Market. One child, a son, was born to them, December 9, 1936. In addition to her husband and son, Ralph Wayne, Jr, she is survived by her father and stepmother, one brother, Carl, of Tigard, Ore, one sister, Mrs Lana Arthur, of Ft Collins, Colo, one half-sister, Mrs Ione Gray, of Ames, several aunts and uncles and a host of cousins, who were always very close to Velma. She was preceded in death by her mother, who passed away November 5, 1905. She spent her entire girlhood in New Market, attending grade school there, finishing her high school in Clarinda, in 1920. For several years she was a teacher in the rural schools in this vicinity. She was interested in any organization for the betterment of the community. She was a member of the Methodist church, taught a girls' Sunday school class, was a member of the library board, 20th Century club and Eastern Star. Hers is a place that can never be filled, but the memory of her happy and loving disposition will be with us always. Funeral services were held at the Walker funeral home at 3 pm Sunday, November 14, 1948, in charge of Rev Clarence Moore and Rev E.L. Field, both of New Market. Music was furnished by Aletha Hutchings. Singers were Opal Wallace and Mary Anderson of New Market. Flower bearers were Maxine Coston, Holly Clark and Edith Abbott. Casket bearers were Kenneth Hankins, Vern Abbott, Marion W. Jetton, Lloyd Shore, Ruby Parsons and Marcus Anderson. CLARINDA HERALD JOURNAL, Clarinda, Iowa, Nov 25, 1948
