Description	:	John Wesley Johnson was born October 25, 1841 near Little Washington, Rappahannock county, Virginia, where he lived with his widowed mother and younger brother and sister until he was fifteen years of age when he left home and went with an uncle to Zanesville, Ohio, where he remained for two years, and then with his uncle moved in a covered wagon to Davis county, Missouri. Read More	John Wesley Johnson was born October 25, 1841 near Little Washington, Rappahannock county, Virginia, where he lived with his widowed mother and younger brother and sister until he was fifteen years of age when he left home and went with an uncle to Zanesville, Ohio, where he remained for two years, and then with his uncle moved in a covered wagon to Davis county, Missouri. Soon after his arrival in Missouri he hired out as a sales clerk in a general store in Gallatin, and after a year moved to Bancroft in the same county and engaged in the mercantile business for himself and it was there he met Sarah Jane Hendricks, who became his wife in 1863. To this union were born six children, Olive, Orion, Eliza J., Gail, Frank M. and Grant. In the early part of the Civil war John raised a company of union soldiers in the township in which he lived and enlisted in the union army becoming First Lieutenant of Company F 43, Missouri Volunteer Infantry, and served with his company until the close of the war and was mustered out at Benton Barracks, Missouri. In 1867 he moved to a farm near Pleasant Hill, Missouri where he lived until 1871 when he moved to his Homestead in Pleasant Township, Harvey county, Kansas, having filed on his claim April 14, 1871. He continued to live on this homestead engaging in general farming and stock raising until 1894 when he was elected to the office of Probate Judge which office he filled for four consecutive terms. After retiring from public office he engaged in the real estate business also owning half interest with his son Grant in the Ragsdale opera house. After disposing of his interests in Newton he lived on a farm near Parkville, Missouri for several years and in 1912 moved to a farm near Fayetteville, Arkansas, and remained there for four years when he returned to Newton and lived until the death of his wife which occurred March 13, 1919, from then on he lived with his children until the time of his death which occurred at 11:32 P.M. May 4, 1933.
