July 30, 1970 Bowbells, Burke Co. North Dakota was the fifth of eleven children born to Nils Carlsson and Bengta Martensdotter from Vollsjo, Sjöbo kommun, Skåne län, Sweden. On March 15, 1890 at the age of six, John emigrated to the United States with his family and they settled near Ortonville, Big Stone Co., Minnesota. His parents returned to Sweden about 1899 but John chose to remain in Minnesota with his older brother Charley and sister Emma even though his mother had already packed his belongings in a trunk. He supported himself by working for local farmers, often herding cattle. In 1906 John moved to North Dakota with his sister Emma Teresa (Carlson) Nelson and Peter G. Nelson and family; he purchased 160.81 acres in Kandiyohi and Roseland Townships, Burke County from the federal government and received his land patent on April 13, 1908 (T159N R90W lot 1, section 4) and (T160N R90W S½SE, NE SE section 33). Before 1910 John returned to Minnesota and on February 10, 1914 he married ELLEN CHRISTINE LARSON, daughter of Karl and Louisa Anderson Larson, in Ortonville, Minnesota. John and Ellen lived and farmed near Clinton, Minnesota until the fall of 1918 when they moved to North Dakota with their three daughters. They traveled by train bringing their farming equipment, cattle and horses with them. The first winter was spent in the stone house on the homestead of Torsten Torkelson in Kandiyohi Township, Burke County. The house was cold and there was no water available for the livestock; during the winter they melted snow to water the livestock. The family moved to a tarpaper shack on John's land in the hills of Kandiyohi and Roseland Townships near Little Butte, ND. They did not stay there long and by 1920 they were living on and renting the K. O. Johnson homestead in Roseland Township on the prairies at the base of the hills about six miles west of Niobe, North Dakota. In 1932 the family moved to Bowbells, North Dakota where John and Ellen resided until their deaths. John and Ellen had ten children: 1. Myrtle ⁷ Louise Carlson Rodin (December 4, 1913-October 24, 1987)m. 1. Milton R. Rodin on Nov. 14, 1937 in Fargo, Cass County ND. She died Oct. 24, 1987 in Fargo, ND and was buried Oct. 28, 1987 at the Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo, ND 2. Grace ⁷ Frances Carlson Nickelson (December 28, 1915-July 7, 2008) m. Gilbert Nickelsen on June 1, 1937 in Bottineau, ND 3. Leone ⁷ Eileen Carlson Holter (November 4, 1917-May 21, 1992) m. Roelf E. Aufforth Oct. 8, 1946 in Plentywood, Sheridan County MT. She died May 21, 1992 in Minot ND 4. Roy ⁷ August Carlson (August 1, 1921-March 28, 2000) married Gladys Volberg, Sept. 22, 1962 in Bowbells, Burke County ND Profession: Insurance Agent and Income Tax business. Roy had polio and walked with crutches and later used a wheelchair. He was very interested in his family history. 5. Eleanor ⁷ Lillian Carlson Barnes (August 2, 1923-June 9, 1986)5. married Charles Barnes on June 1, 1945 in Brooklyn ND. She died June 9, 1986 Brooklyn ND and was buried June 12, 1986 in Brooklyn NY 6. Florence ⁷ Viola Carlson Elstad (March 23, 1925-February 3, 2002) married John Melvin Elstad May 28, 1948 in Flaxton, Burke County ND. Florence Elstad (1925 - 2002)buried in Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mandan, ND 7. Verna ⁷ Marion Carlson (March 5, 1927-December 30, 1972) married Audran M "Audie" Melby. She died Dec. 30, 1972 in Kenmare, Ward County ND. 8. Glen ⁷ Edward John Carlson (December 24, 1930-August 10, 1989) married Mary Ellen William on Sept. 9, 1958 in Westhope, Bottineau County, ND He died Aug. 10, 1989 in Carrington, Foster County, ND and was buried Aug. 15, 1989 in Lakeview Cemetery, Kenmare,Ward County ND. Two sons died at birth and were not named. His children remember that their father was careful not to show violence toward any of them. He worked hard at controlling his temper and succeeded. Funeral service was held at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Bowbells, ND. Bearers were his grandchildren: Wesley Nickelson, Rolf Aufforth, Donovan Holter, Brent Melby, Douglas Holter and Wayne Nickelson. He and his wife, Ellen Larson Carlson are buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Kenmare, North Dakota with their two infant sons.
