Her paternal grandparents were Carl Åkesson (1803-1871) and Bengta Carlsdotter (1808-1885). Her maternal grandparents were Marten Persson (1817-1888) and Karna Andersdotter (1817-1890). In 1891 she emigrated along with her family to Big Stone County, MN when she was 10 years old. Emma brought her Swedish Bible and confirmation book with her. The Carlson and Nelson families were neighbors before coming to the Big Stone County, MN. Two Carlson girls, Elna and Emma, married two Nelson men: Nils Nelson who married Elna Carlson and Peter George Nelson who married Emma Carlson when she was 19 yrs. old. The Carlson and Nelson families emigrated on the same ship through to Ellis Island, NYC. They traveled via train to Ortonville, MN. Emma attended school in Big Stone County. Emma married PETER GEORGE NELSON on Oct. 29, 1898 in Ortonville, Big Stone Lake Co., MN. That same year after their marriage, her father (Nils Carlsson) and mother (Bengta Mårtensdotter) and oldest sister, Elna, and her husband, Nils Nilsson) and children returned to Sweden. Her father felt he had made his fortune and promised his daughter, Elna and son-in-law, Nils, that he would buy them a house if they moved back to Sweden. Peter and Emma became U.S. citizens on May 8, 1905. After her marriage, Emma farmed with her husband for 8 years in Big Stone County, MN. The 3 oldest of their 6 children were born in Ortonville, Big Stone County, MN: Aden, Olga, and Alvin. In 1905 her husband, Peter, purchased Section 12 of Kandyiohi Township in Burke County, ND. And in Mar. 1906 the family moved to Kandyiohi Township via train from Ortonville, MN. Three more children were born on their farm near Niobe - Chester, Ernest and Roger. Emma was a devoted Christian and was very active in the Niobe Baptist Church as one of its founding members. Her well-worn Swedish Bible was a testament of her devotion to the Lord. Emma was a great cook and was known for her Swedish rye bread, homemade strawberry jam and good coffee. She played the guitar and sang much to the delight of her children. She had the gift of hospitality and was ready for company and loved to entertain family and friends. Emma died April 17, 1946 at the age of 67 at her home following a stroke and was buried alongside her husband, Peter George Nelson in Lakeview Cemetery, Kenmare, ND. She was preceded in death by her parents, Nils Carlsson and Bengta Mårtensson and daughter, Olga, who died of the flu when she was 21 years old and daughter-in-law, Edith Hedstrup wife of son, Aden Nelson. She was survived by her husband, Peter, who lived three more years, and sons (Aden (Florence) of Burke County, ND; Alvin ( Ella) of rural Kenmare, Chester (Amy) of rural Kenmare, Ernest (Helen) of Mohall, ND; Roger (Erma) of rural Kenmare.
