Description	:	John W. Bachman, 28, of Clarence, was killed Friday night, September 10, 1954, when the car he was driving collided head-on with a semi-trailer truck on Highway 30, three miles east of Lisbon, during a rain storm while returning home from work in Cedar Rapids. Reports are the truck may have crossed over into the path of the Bachman car, blinded by both the rain and glare of headlights. The truck driver was unhurt in the accident. Funeral services were held Sunday, September 12, at 1:30 p.m., at Chapman Funeral Chapel, Clarence and 2:00 p.m., at the Methodist Church in Clarence, by the Rev. Forrest E. Flowers. Mrs. Robert Joslin was the organist. Interment was in the Clarence Cemetery, Clarence, Iowa, with American Legion Victory Post #286 conducting military graveside services. John William Bachman was born January 19, 1926, in Clarence, the son of Arthur and Irma (Severin) Bachman. He graduated from Clarence High School with the class of 1943. He proudly served with the U.S. Navy during World War II for two years, entering the service in March of 1944. He took boot training and attended radio school at Farragut, Idaho. He was also stationed at Bremerton, Washington, Klamoth Falls and Corvallis, Oregon. In the summer of 1946, he took part in Operations Crossroads in the Bikini area of the Pacific and was honorably discharged in November of that same year. Following his discharge from the Navy, he worked at the Clarence Co-operative and also farmed for a time in the Clarence vicinity. For the past several months, he had been working at the Montrose Hotel in Cedar Rapids. He was manager of the Junior Legion Baseball team in Clarence and took an active part in basketball and bowling and was keenly interested in all sports. He was a member of the Methodist Church of Clarence, Mt. Hope Lodge #501 and of Victory Post #281 of the American Legion. Surviving are his mother, Irma Bachman of Clarence; three sisters, Dorothy (Harold) Harmsen of Tipton and Alberta (John) Decker and Frances (Ferrell) Lemon, both of Burlington; one brother, Edward (Marianne) Bachman of Iowa City; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and family members.
