Funeral services were 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 2, at the Methodist Church in Clarence, with Rev. Bernard Kemper officiating. Eleanor Sawyer and Irma Kelly were in charge of the flowers. Pallbearers were Ralph Sawyer, Arnold Pruess, Lloyd Hockman, Lester Kelly, Arnold Meier and Clarence Bixler. Arthur William Bachman was born May 4, 1892, in Clarence, the son of William and Louise (Bauman) Bachman. He graduated from Clarence High School in 1909. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from December 20, 1918 to June 3, 1919 and was on the battle fields of France during World War. The gases used on the battle fields affected his health for the rest of his life. He had joined the Methodist Church in Clarence at an early age, however at times he was unable to attend due to a lack of strength. His efforts to attend the services at times in spite of his weakness was impressive to all. He married to Irma Mae Severin on November 19, 1919, in Davenport. Together they farmed just North of Clarence, until his health began to fail. The family moved to Clarence, where he ran a feed mill, managed the Clarence Shipping Association and acted as scale master in turn. He has not been able to follow any active occupation for the last five years. He was a member of the American Legion and the Mount Hope Lodge A.F.A.M. Surviving are his wife, Irma; three daughters, Dorothy (Harold) Harmsen of Tipton and Frances (Ferrell) Lemon and Alberta Bachman, both of Burlington; two sons, John Bachman, serving in the U.S. Navy and stationed at Astoria, Oregon, and Edward Bachman, serving in the U.S. Marines and is at sea; two step-grandsons, Richard and Ronald Lemon; one brother, Fred (Florence) Bachman of Clarence; and one sister, Clara Bachman of Independence.
