Description	:	Obit: John W. "Jack" Bateman John, a well known resident of Winthrop the past 40 years, passed away Sunday afternoon at an Independence hospital following a brief illness. He was born June 7, 1890 on a farm near Central City, the son of William and Margaret Kearns Bateman. "Jack" Bateman John, a well known resident of Winthrop the past 40 years, passed away Sunday afternoon at an Independence hospital following a brief illness. He was born June 7, 1890 on a farm near Central City, the son of William and Margaret Kearns Bateman. He received his education in the schools at Central City, and was baptized in the Baptist church at Alburnett, Iowa. At an early age John was trained by his father into the caponizing field. He became so efficient, and had such low fatality rates among his operations, that his practice expanded so that it was necessary for him to train another in order to meet the demands of his many clients. He could, and often did perform 1000 operations a day. John was modest and unassuming, so his extensive field of practice was not generally known. He was married in 1917 in Boulder, Colorado to Miss Vera James. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Robert Montague of Los Gatos, California; 2 brothers, George of Marion and Glenn of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Four sisters, Kathryn Soesbe of Glasgow, Montana, Nettie Satterlee, Floy Smith of Central City, Flo DeBois Independence, four granddaughters. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Fawcett Funeral Home with Rev. John Allsbury officiating. Burial was made in Mt. Clark cemetery in Central City. Pallbearers were Charles Jones, Raymond Thomas, Charles Gritton, Beryl Smith, Galen Scott and Ray Barbian. Cause of death: Hypertension-Apoplexy
