Bateman, long a resident of this community (Central City) and for a great many year associated with its business life, was strickened at the door of his residence last Friday, July 9, 1926, as he was returning from a trip uptown, death occurred 30 minutes later, Mr. Bateman being 70 years, 2 months and 9 days old at the time of his death. He had lived a good life and his first thoughts were always of his family.William Henry Bateman was born in Burmingham, England, May 1st, 1856, the oldest of nine children born to W. H. and Mary Bateman. He first came to this country at the age of 12 years, returning to England two years later, finally settling here at the age of nineteen years. He crossed the ocean seven times. In 1877 he came to Iowa and later was united in marriage to Margaret Ann Kearns, settling on what is now known as the Jake Wassmer farm. Eleven children were born to this union, two of whom preceded him in death in infancy. A daughter, Marguerite, died at the age of 23 years.Mr. Bateman was christened an Episcopalian at birth, later uniting with the Christian church. He joined the Masonic order at Unionville, Connecticut, in 1881, and was transferred to the local lodge in 1886. On his departure for Colorado in 1916, he withdrew his card here and was made one of the few honorary members of the fraternity at Boulder, Colorado.
