Description	:	John William "Jock" Pumphrey Jr., 94, died Aug. 25 at his home in Leesburg. He was born March 7, 1917 near Leesburg and was the son of Mary Catherine Herndon and John William Pumphrey Sr. He was the owner of Jock's Exxon in Leesburg. Read More	John William "Jock" Pumphrey Jr., 94, died Aug. 25 at his home in Leesburg. He was born March 7, 1917 near Leesburg and was the son of Mary Catherine Herndon and John William Pumphrey Sr. He was the owner of Jock's Exxon in Leesburg. He began work at that location in 1937 and remained there until his retirement in 2003, except for time out for service during World War II. Immediately following the attack on Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he saw action in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. Following the war he returned to Leesburg and worked for L.S. Hutchison managing both the South King Street and West Market Street locations. He purchased the West Market Street location in 1965. The business remains in the family. He was active in local government serving on Leesburg Town Council from 1959 to 1974. While serving on the town council two major accomplishments during his tenure were the acquisition of the current Leesburg Executive Airport and obtaining a permanent source of water for the community from the Potomac River. Prior to that, the town relied on wells for its water source. He was also a member of the Leesburg Volunteer Fire Department serving as chief engineer from 1948 to 1960. He was a member of the Leesburg Host Lions Club where he was honored in 1999 for 50 years of perfect attendance. He held most of the club's offices and was president in 1957-58 and was named the Melvin Jones Fellow in 2000. In 2001 He was awarded the Good Scout Award by the National Capital Area Council Boy Scouts of America. He was also an active member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church where he and his wife Ruth Alice Orrison were married Aug. 17, 1950. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons John W. Pumphrey III and James L. Pumphrey, both of Leesburg, and Jerry O. Pumphrey of Richmond; two granddaughters; and four grandsons. He was predeceased by his sisters Virginia Doll, Mary Moody and Rose Manuel. Friends and family may call from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29 at Colonial Funeral Home in Leesburg. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30 at St. James Episcopal Church in Leesburg, with the Reverend John Ohmer officiating. Interment will be at Union Cemetery in Leesburg.
