Description	:	Longtime Leesburg resident Ruth Orrison Pumphrey passed away at her home on Thursday, April 26, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. Ruth was born on South King Street in Leesburg on September 5, 1925. She was the daughter of William and Dorothy Donahoe Orrison, and had three siblings. After a brief time living in Arlington, Virginia she moved back to Leesburg. Ruth attended Leesburg High School and enjoyed playing softball. She was also on a local duckpin bowling team. Ruth was born on South King Street in Leesburg on September 5, 1925. She was the daughter of William and Dorothy Donahoe Orrison, and had three siblings. After graduating in 1942, she worked for Peoples National Bank. On August 17, 1950, Ruth married John W. Pumphrey (Jock). Ruth (or “Queenie”, as she was lovingly called by her husband) and Jock moved into a house built by her father, just steps from the homes of her parents, sister and brother. Here, she and Jock would spend their entire married lives and raise three sons. Working alongside her husband Jock, and later her son Jimmy, Ruth managed the books at Jock's Exxon. She could be counted on to always balance the ledgers to the penny. Ruth was a member of the Leesburg Lioness Club, as well as a lifelong member of the St. James Episcopal Church, where she taught Sunday school and was also a member of the Davis Chapter. Ruth was always most concerned about the well-being of everyone else before her own. She valued faith, family, and bounty from her gardens. Ruth was passionate about her family and her gardening. She had a special touch for soothing babies. She loved to sing to and play with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking, reading, scrapbooking, canning, and watching the Washington Nationals. Ruth was the family historian. Ruth was a loving mother and advisor to her three sons. She went on to become a wonderful, supporting mother to their wives, and a loving and cherished “Nana” to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ruth humbly ran the background and was the key to the many noted community achievements of her husband, Jock. In 2001, Ruth, along with Jock, received the Good Scouts Award from the Boy Scouts of America in recognition of their guidance and contribution to the youth of the Leesburg community. Ruth is survived by her three sons and their families: John Pumphrey, his wife Jan, and their two children Kristen Dellett and John Pumphrey. Kristen and husband, Christopher Dellett, have daughter Harper Dellett, Ruth’s great-granddaughter. John and wife Marie have son Jack, Ruth’s great-grandson; Jim Pumphrey, his wife McLean, and their two sons Tripp and Tyler. Tyler is married to Rachel Pumphrey; Jerry Pumphrey, his wife Myra, and their children David and Sarah. David is married to Paige Pumphrey. Additionally, she is survived by nephews Sam Orrison and Tom Orrison and nieces Janet Reynolds and Gaye Richie. Lastly, she is survived by her beloved companion, Bella – her cat. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Jock Pumphrey; her siblings Margaret Marr, William Orrison, and Albert Orrison; and nephew Ron Orrison. Ruth had a keen memory and a dry wit, which she showed to the end of her days. Ruth will be dearly missed by the many loved ones whose lives she touched. Family will receive family and friends on Tuesday May 1, 2018 from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Colonial Funeral Home 201 Edwards Ferry Road NE, Leesburg VA 20176. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at St. James Episcopal Church, 14 Cornwall Street NW Leesburg, Virginia 20176. Mrs. Pumphrey will be laid to rest at Union Cemetery in Leesburg immediately following the service.
