Langston, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at their home in Valley Falls, Monday, September 19, 1921, with a number of their children and grandchildren present. Those present at the fine wedding dinner were Mr. and Mrs. Will Langston and two daughters, Leona and Marie; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Langston and daughter Ruth, of Meriden, Frank Langston of Topeka, Claude, George, Ruth, Will Jr of Valley Falls and Rev. Chas. H. Kimball. Two daughters, Mrs. Dora Horn of Pontatack, Okla. and Mrs. Rose Dutt of Chicago and one Son, Walter L. of Onaga, Iowa and a large number of relatives, were not able to be present owing partly to the unfavorable weather. When Mr. and Mrs. Langston celebrated their Golden wedding ten years ago, a large company was present. ----------------------------------------------------- John William Langston was born in Independence, Mo., on March 9th, 1839. When John W. was but two years old his father died. Placed in the care of his paternal grandfather and uncles, he accompanied them to the present site of Topeka where his elders, in government employee, had charge of the Shawnee Indian Mills for a couple years. They occupied two log huts on what is now Kansas Avenue, about third street. The mills ground corn and wheat for the Indians. Mr. Langston remembers seeing the Pappan ferry boats crossing the Kaw river loaded with Indians. In 1843 his uncles took him to Buchanan County, Mo., where, near DeKalb, he grew to manhood having learned the trade of stone mason and was a mechanic generally. There he met and married Sarah Jane Hisle, September 9, 1861. His bride was born in Kentucky July 9, 1846 and was a bride at 15. They located in Atchison County, Kansas, where they resided for 24 years. To this union eleven children were born, five of whom have passed on - Jess dying at Valley Falls a few years ago. They came to Jefferson County in 1886 where they have since resided 14 of the years in Valley Falls. As farmer, stone mason, cement worker or general mechanic, and dealing in real estate, Mr. Langston says that he and wife have made a "barrel of money" in their time, divided up with the children and have some left. At home they still do their own work, make a garden, care for and milk two cows --- each has a cow --- and raise chickens. For the first time in many years, they have no pigs. At his trade or other labor, he can still do a man's work. On their more than a city block they have a comfortable home and something to do and continue to enjoy life. That they have been permitted to live longer than the allotted span of life --- are the spared monuments of the Father's favor, is for some good purpose, they hope, but not yet made known. Other newspaper articles including the obituary for their son Jesse (14 Oct 1916) in the Jefferson County Tribune and an article on their 50th (Golden) wedding anniversary - 21 Sep 1911 - The Valley Falls New Era, state that three children died in infancy, two sisters and a brother, and are buried in Fitzpatrick Cemetery in Atchson County, KS. The youngest daughter Nettie died about 1901 and is buried at Effingham, KS and their son Jesse died Oct 1916 and is buried in the Farrar section in the Valley Falls Cemetery Contributor: RSKamp (49907564)
