At the age of fourteen he emigrated with his parents, John and Caroline Rhode Lenz, and settled in Hamilton county, Nebraska. He married Emma Zbinden, daughter of Joseph and Lydia Stahly Zbinden, in Aurora, Nebraska 17 October 1883, who preceded him in death twenty-four years ago. Nine children were born to this union all of whom are living: Ida, Minnie, William, Elnora, Tillie, Louise, Henry, Oscar, and Elmer. Mr. Lenz spent the greater part of his life on a farm in the Poole neighborhood. Besides the children he is mourned by two brothers, four sisters, thirteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. In childhood he had received a Christian education in the Lutheran church, to which he remained loyal to his end. Death took place January 22 at the home of one of his daughters in Denver, due to bronchial pneumonia, at the age of 70 years and seven months. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. from Crawford's funeral home with service held at the Zion Lutheran church in charge of Rev. E. O. Potratz, who spoke on "Heavenly Mansions' and the way to them, from John 14:1-7. Mr. Lenz was buried beside his wife in the Dow cemetery northeast of Kearney. The funeral was well attended by relatives and friends north of the city as well as by some from a greater distance and members of the Zion congregation in Kearney. Members of Zion's choir under direction of Miss Laura Hartman sang, "Nearer, my God to Thee, " "Rock of Ages," and "There Is an Hour," from the Lutheran hymnal. After the death of Emma, John married Louisa Fredenburg and they had one son, Ernest Lenz born October 10, 1908. The couple divorced and Ernest moved to Seattle with his mother where he was listed on the 1920 census. Ernest later moved to Los Angles where he died November 7, 1976 and is buried in the Glenwood Forest Lawn cemetery. Ancestry.com
