The party had traveled by rail from Ohio to Davenport and then came on to Iowa City by stage where they planned to walk on west. They lost their way, however, and discovered they had walked to Washington county instead of Iowa and had to hire a team at Richland to get them to Millersburg. William Lortz came from Germany to Richland county, Ohio in 1853 and in that same year married Elizabeth Baltz at Mansfield, O. Both had been born in Germany - he at Asbach, Darmstadt Nov. 8, 1827 and she in Herchenrode, July 28,1834. After arriving in the county the party tramped around several days, and finally William entered 200 acres in section 27, Pilot township. George later settled in section 23. When each man had entered his land, they went back to Iowa City to have it recorded and then returned to Mansfield. The next fall, about Oct. 1, William came back to Iowa bringing with him his wife. They got slabs from Miller's sawmill and laid them on poles, covering them with sod and hay. They lived in the house only a short time when it caught fire and burned to the ground. Just the day before the house burned the Lortz brothers had returned from Iowa City where they had purchased more then $60 worth of winter supplies including flour, meat, potatoes and clothing. All was burned. They saved nothing except the gold coin, which they had secured in a German trunk. The family was left destitute and had it not been for the few dollars of gold would have suffered from hunger. The next spring they built a frame house of boards. William continued to live on the farm for a number of years with his wife and three sons John George, William K, and Charles D. George married Annie Davis and William and Charles married sisters, Mary and Annie Goodman"
