The two shared a great love of horse racing, and John William bestowed his friend's name to his second born son. That's how the Leland name came into our family Smith histories." More from grandson William Leland: In the late 1890's they sold their land (maybe in Woodland, CA) and moved everything and everyone and 40 head of horses to Woodville, Tulare County, CA. Sounds easy but consider traveling some 300 miles in wagons trying to keep 40 head of horses under control day and night. The trip would have taken at least 10-12 days. John became County Supervisor and a Delegate to the Democratic Conventions. He also started the Tulare Irrigation District."
