In 1860, he was a laborer living in Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 10" tall with brown hair and gray eyes. A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted in Gettysburg June 19, 1863, into what was then called Bell's Cavalry Militia, mustered into federal service there June 23 as a private with Co. B, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pa), the federalized name for Bell's Cavalry, and honorably discharged with his company February 20, 1864. He is in the... In 1860, he was a laborer living in Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 10" tall with brown hair and gray eyes. A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted in Gettysburg June 19, 1863, into what was then called Bell's Cavalry Militia, mustered into federal service there June 23 as a private with Co. B, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pa), the federalized name for Bell's Cavalry, and honorably discharged with his company February 20, 1864. He is in the company register as "W. J. Wible." He next served as a sergeant with [Capt. Edward Morgan] Warren's Independent Cavalry Militia July 26 through November 30, 1864, and is on the roster as "William J. Wibble." He last enlisted in Chambersburg February 10, 1865, and mustered into federal service there February 15 as a private with Co. B of the one-year organization of the 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry. Detached to duty at City Point, Virginia, he honorably discharged with his company July 8, 1865. He married Mary Elizabeth Hess sometime during May 1869 in Safe Harbor, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and fathered William Thaddeus Stevens (b. 01/??/70), Joseph M. (b. 06/??/72), Lewis H. (b. 1875), John Edward (b. 04/??/80), Rebecca Wilhelmina (b. 02/??/86), and Bessie (b. 04/??/88). At some point, he moved his family to Illinois but relocated to Kansas where he remained until his death. His surname was also spelled "Weible." He also enlisted in Gettysburg July 25, 1864, mustered into state service at Harrisburg August 16 as a private with Warren's Independent Cavalry Militia Company, promoted to sergeant August 16, and honorably discharged with the company November 30, 1864. He is on the roster as "William J. Wibble."
