Read More	John William Wood was born on December 14, 1833 near Sperryville, Rappahannock County, Virginia, the son of John Hayward Wood and Lucy (Miller) Wood. John and Lucy are known to have had a number of children and at least six sons, five of whom are known to have served in the Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War. The children known to have been born to John Hayward Wood and Lucy (Miller) Wood include; 1. Charles Burrell Wood, born October 18, 1829; died on November 5, 1901; Charles B. Wood was married to Mary E. A. Miller on November 17, 1853 in Rappahannock County, Virginia. Mary was born on ___________ __, 1835, the daughter of Warner Miller and Lucy (__________) Miller. Charles B. Wood is known to have served in Co. G of the 49th Virginia along with at least one of his brothers. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on July 22, 1861. However he was not re-elected and resigned his commission on April 30, 1862. He farmed for many years after the war and it is said that the Red Rebel apple, which is a beautiful apple, originated about 1850 in Rappahannock, Virginia on the farm of Captain Charles B. Wood. George Wood, born c. 1835/36 in Virginia. 4. Ashby H. Wood, born c. 1837/38 in Virginia. There was a First Lieutenant Henry Ashford Wood in Company G of the 49th Virginia. He enlisted July 22, 1861 and was elected a Sergeant. He was eventually elected and promoted to Second Lieutenant on April 13, 1863 and eventually to 1st Lieutenant. He was eventually transferred to Co. K as Co. G could only muster three enlisted men fit for duty and he resigned as First Lieutenant of Co. K on December 28, 1864. Ashby is known to have been a merchant and farmer in Rappahannock County, Virginia after the war. 5. James Wood, born c. 1839/40 in Virginia. 6. Brereton Wood, born c. 1841/42 in Virginia. John Hayward Wood, who was born on September 2, 1797 in Fauquier County, Virginia, died on Aug. 14, 1843 in Rappahannock County, Virginia, leaving Lucy with at least six children, all under the age of 15. There were likely other older ones as well. John Hayward Wood's mortal remains were laid in the Wood/Johnson Family Cemetery in Rappahannock County, Virginia. Lucy (Miller) Wood, who was born in 1809, died in 1877. John William Wood, the son of John Hayward Wood and Lucy Miller Wood, was born December 14, 1833, at OAK HILL, a plantation on the western edge of Sperryville, in Rappahannock County, Virginia. In 1854, he left home on horseback and headed west to seek his fortune. The phrase "Go west, young man" had appeared in "The New Yorker," a weekly literary paper founded by Horace Greeley. This advice prompted many of the young, unemployed and ambitious to leave the eastern part of the country at that time. John W. Wood's original objective was to save $10,000 and return to the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains and the plantation life he had known as a young man. His first step was Atchinson County, Missouri, where he became a partner in a mercantile business. On September 6, 1859, at the age of 25, he married Eliza Ann Hopkins, age 16 of Linden, Missouri. Eliza was the daughter of Nelson Orlando Hopkins, an area farmer, who had been a '49er in the California gold fields. To this marriage was born five sons and six daughters. Soon after the beginning of the Civil War between the North and The South, on April 12, 1861, John W. Wood attempted to return to Virginia to join his five brothers in the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Traveling "home" was prevented due to the lines between the North and South being closed and he returned to Atchison County where he worked on his father-in-laws's farm. During the closing days of the War it became apparent that a southern sympathizer in a border state such as Missouri, would have a difficult time in business so the decision was made to move further west. In the Spring of 1865, the family, which by now consisted of two sons and a daughter, ages four, two and one, moved to Magnolia, Iowa. With the financial backing of Messrs Rudasill & Low of Atchison County, Missouri, a mercantile business was started under the name of Rudasill, Wood & Low. In the second year of operation, from the spring of 1866 to the spring of 1867, the store did $60,000 of business. The ability of John W. Wood to understand German was a big help in dealing with the German farmers in the Magnolia area who had emigrated from Germany. In 1871, John W. Wood was elected Harrison County Treasurer and served in that office for two terms. Upon leaving the treasurer's office, he purchased the John Stocker farm northwest of Logan and conducted a general farming and cattle feeding operation until 1900. The “History of Harrison County, Iowa”, published in 1891 contains the following biography on , pages 972 - 973; "JOHN W. WOOD, a farmer and stock-raiser, of section 2, township 79, range 43, came to Harrison County in the spring of 1865, and settled in Magnolia, where he engaged in the mercantile business in partnership with P. J. Rudasill and James Low, and was in that business until 1871. He was elected to the office of County Treasurer, in the fall of 1872, and served two terms, and after going out of office he remained in Magnolia, until the spring of 1877, when he purchased the farm he now lives upon which then consisted of two hundred and forty acres. He now has seven hundred and twenty acres. He was born in Rappahannock County, Va., in December, 1833, in 1854 came to Missouri, and embarked in the mercantile business and remained until the time he came to Harrison County in 1865. Our subject was married in Atchison County, Missouri, in September 1859, to Eliza Hopkins, and by this marriage eleven children were born - Charles, Mary, William, Frank, Kate (deceased), Anna E., Lucy, Ella, Effie, J. B., and Edward J. Mrs. Wood was born in Clinton County, Mo., in 1842, and remained with her parents until the date of her marriage. Mr. Wood is a member of the Masonic lodge at Logan.
