He came to America in 1857, settling in Bellevue, Jackson, Iowa. "John worked as a teamster in Bellevue, Iowa. Soon after his arrival in America, for some unknown reason, John dropped the second 'F' in Wolf. Even though many Luxembourgers avoided military service by coming to America, John joined the Union army to help his new countrymen fight in the Civil War just five years after his arrival. On August 19, 1862, he enlisted as a private in the Iowa 5th Cavalry Unit, Company L. His enlistment papers describe him as 5 ft 8.5 inches with blue eyes and light hair. He saw service in Georgia, Florida, Kentucky and Alabama. In a battle at Nashville, Tennessee, he received a shoulder injury and was sent home on sick furlough from February 1865 until he was discharged on June 17, 1865. In later years, he suffered much from the rheumatism that settled in his injured shoulder. "When John returned from the war, he ran a dray line in Bellevue and then later farmed near Springbrook, Iowa. He married Margaret Manderscheid on November 11, 1866. She had been living with her sister and brother in law Michael and Magdalena Biever near Springbrook. Eight children were born to them between 1869 and 1883 in Jackson County, Iowa. In 1884, John moved his family to Remsen, Plymouth County, Iowa where he rented a quarter section of land north of Remsen in Meadow Township. Three more children were born there. Then in 1888, the family rented a farm in Nassau Township, Sioux County, Iowa, 3 1/2 miles south and 1 mile east of Alton. Probably long time friend and brother in law Michael Biever told them a neighboring farm was for rent. When John died two years later in 1890, the couple had seven children still at home, the youngest child, Peter, was only two. They were living on a 200 acre farm owned by Rev Joseph Schmit.
