Willey Died Thursday Old Settler And Civil War Veteran Died at Old Soldier's Home in Marshallton John W. Willey, 81 died last Thursday at Marshalltown. He was one of the old settlers in Iowa coming here from Ohio with his parents in 1854. He was a veteran of the Civil War serving in the southwest. Funeral service for John W. Willey were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the M.E. church, with Elder Sordon of the Latter Day Saints Church of Burlington in charge. The singers were Claude Barker, Martha Wysaup, Alma Beirman, and Leslie Mosena of Burlington. Interment in the family lot in the Brooks Cemetery. The pallbearers were grandsons of the deceased, Earl, John, Donald, Ellis Anderson and Orlan Calloway of New London and Elbert Willey of Davenport, Iowa. John Woodbridge Willey was born September 8, 1846 at Marietta, Washington County, Ohio. He was the eldest child of Ely and Elizabeth Willey. The family moved to Iowa in 1854, settling near Montrose. Later moving to New London where Mr. Willey grew to manhood. He enlisted in Co. G., Ill. Calvary in April 1864. Served under Gen. Geo. A. Custer in a campaign throughout the southwest and received his honorable discharge at the close of the war. On September 8, 1870, Mr. Willey was married to Mary Jane Prier who survives him and resides at Burlington, Iowa. To this union was born eight children; Loren of Carrington, North Dakota; Lawrence of Miami, Florida; Mary Elizabeth Anderson, of New London, Iowa(Deceased); Joseph C. of Davenport, Iowa; John R. of New London, Iowa; Florence Lavinia, who died in infancy; Effie L. Taylor of Burlington; Edith D. of Burlington, Iowa. Besides those of his immediate family who remain to mourn his loss, there is on brother, Chas. Willey, of Lamoni, Iowa, and three sisters; Mrs. Lavinia McDonald, of Des Moines, Iowa, Mrs. Florence Beer, New London, Iowa; and Mrs. Helen Willey of South Carolina. Also, 30 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and many friends. On Feb. 29, 1888, Mr. Willey was adjudged insane and confined to the state and county hospitals at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. He was transferred to the Soldier Home at Marshalltown, Iowa, March 27, 1927. It was here he died July 28, 1927.
